Second edition, very rare, of a charm<strong>in</strong>g volume, characteris<strong>in</strong>g problems<br />

with servants and labourers as symptoms of their submission to the devil, as<br />

part of the medieval devil tradition <strong>in</strong> German folklore and popular didactic<br />

literature. Glaser, a protestant theologian, identiWes a particular ‘Ges<strong>in</strong>d’<br />

or servant devil, who <strong>in</strong>Xuences domestic servants, who were deemed too<br />

weak to reject his advances. In eight <strong>in</strong>dividual chapters Glaser discusses<br />

common problems, such as servants not show<strong>in</strong>g up for work, servants preferr<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to work for godless masters rather than god-fear<strong>in</strong>g ones; servants<br />

tak<strong>in</strong>g up employment, but then prov<strong>in</strong>g unreliable and mak<strong>in</strong>g excuses for<br />

gett<strong>in</strong>g out of it; servants keep<strong>in</strong>g work<strong>in</strong>g hours without gett<strong>in</strong>g any work<br />

done; or servants who after hav<strong>in</strong>g Wnished employment bad-mouth their<br />

masters. In each case Glaser identiWes devilish <strong>in</strong>Xuences, and cites relevant<br />

passages from the Bible to act aga<strong>in</strong>st it. Although the belief <strong>in</strong> the devil’s<br />

<strong>in</strong>Xuence waned <strong>in</strong> the eighteenth century, the prejudice aga<strong>in</strong>st the motives<br />

of disaVected servants cont<strong>in</strong>ued.<br />

The charm<strong>in</strong>g title page woodcut shows a kitchen scene, with the devil<br />

try<strong>in</strong>g to seduce the maid, and broken crockery on the Xoor.<br />

There was an earlier edition pr<strong>in</strong>ted by Feirabend, published <strong>in</strong> 1564<br />

(Halle) and another one published <strong>in</strong> Weissenfels by Hantzsch (Munich<br />

only).<br />
