Third (Wrst 1859) and most important edition of what is arguably Florence<br />

Night<strong>in</strong>gale’s most important work. ‘Based upon Night<strong>in</strong>gale’s extensive<br />

knowledge of English and Cont<strong>in</strong>ental hospitals, the work was the<br />

most exhaustive study to date of hospital plann<strong>in</strong>g and adm<strong>in</strong>istration. She<br />

blamed the majority of hospital deaths on overcrowd<strong>in</strong>g, lack of light and<br />

ventilation, and the collection of large numbers of the sick under one roof’<br />

(Norman). Night<strong>in</strong>gale is best remembered, of course, for alleviat<strong>in</strong>g these<br />

conditions at the barracks hospital <strong>in</strong> Scutari dur<strong>in</strong>g the Crimean War, ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

the hearts of the British nation and earn<strong>in</strong>g the epithet ‘The Lady of the<br />

Lamp’.<br />

This edition conta<strong>in</strong>s the excessively important papers recommend<strong>in</strong>g<br />

uniform hospital statistics together with the forms for achiev<strong>in</strong>g those.<br />

These were a breakthrough both <strong>in</strong> hospital adm<strong>in</strong>istration and <strong>in</strong> the<br />

gather<strong>in</strong>g of statistical <strong>in</strong>formation with a view to us<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

for better<strong>in</strong>g situations. Night<strong>in</strong>gale had Wrst presented these papers at the<br />

International Statistical Congress of 1861. The Congress, which took place<br />

<strong>in</strong> London, was chaired by Adolphe Quetelet, whom Night<strong>in</strong>gale greatly<br />

admired. The Wrst female to be elected a member of the Statistical Society<br />

(<strong>in</strong> 1858), Night<strong>in</strong>gale had worked closely with William Farr (the Society’s<br />

President and the Registrar General) prepar<strong>in</strong>g the programme for the section<br />

of the Congress cover<strong>in</strong>g sanitary statistics and prepar<strong>in</strong>g the papers<br />
