permitted. A typical vermi-composting plant is shown in Figure 5.5.<br />

Type of earthworms<br />

There are over 4000 species of earthworms identified till date. These are primarily divided into three groups.<br />

1) Epigeic<br />

These are litter dwelling, feed on highly organic materials. They live in upper part of the soil i.e. 30-45 cm<br />

deep where large quantity of degradable organic matter is present.<br />

Species:<br />

• EisoniaFoetida<br />

• Eudrelus Eugeniae<br />

• Perionyx Excavatus.<br />

2) Endogeic<br />

These are, deep soil earthworms, need less organic matter. These are observed in<br />

monsoon.<br />
