IMPROVING HEALTH AND SAFETY OF PMC<br />
WORKERS, RAG PICKERS AND CITIZENS IN<br />
PROXIMITY WITH THE LANDFILL<br />
Target: To introduce programme for improving the health and safety of PMC workers, rag<br />
pickers and citizens in proximity with the landfill.<br />
Lead Agency: PMC, NGOs working with the rag pickers.<br />
Support Agency: PMC, NGOs working with the rag pickers.<br />
Location (Suggested): All those locations where the PMC Workers come in contact with<br />
waste management including while collection, at the transfer station and at the landfill.<br />
Special attention should be given at the Community Sorting <strong>Centre</strong>s<br />
Description: An assessment should be carried out to<br />
• Identify and understand the health and safety issues faced by the PMC workers and rag<br />
pickers.<br />
• Assist with the injuries and illness prevention efforts<br />
• Help investigate the underlying causes of injuries<br />
• Help find and implement solutions to health and safety problems<br />
• Provision of health and safety equipment for PMC workers and rag pickers<br />
• Impart training for safe procedure for handling of wastes.<br />
Assessment for the health and safety issues near the landfill should address Pest<br />
Control, Litter Control, Fire Control, Dust Control, Odour Control, Site Safety, Leachate<br />
Management<br />
Responsibility of PMC:<br />
• PMC should impart training to the rag pickers and PMC workers regarding safety<br />
measures<br />
• Protective equipment should be supplied to the workers<br />
• Regular health checkups should be done at the municipal hospitals<br />
• Medical insurance should be provided<br />
