IMPARTING AWARENESS AND TRAINING FOR<br />

BMW MANAGEMENT<br />

Target:<br />

‣ To create awareness among entire medical fraternity<br />

‣ To ensure BMW rules are complied.<br />

‣ To ensure continual efforts being made to protect public health.<br />

‣ To train medical staff, medical students on the health hazards of BMW and their<br />

proper segregation and management<br />

Lead Agency: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), MPCB<br />

Support Agency: Plastic Waste Management sub-division of the ISWM Cell, PMC,<br />

Research Institutions such as National Chemical Laboratory, polymer manufacturers and<br />

users, NGOs’, generators and housing societies.<br />

Location (Suggested): For awareness and promotion of the use of biodegradable<br />

plastics, the <strong>Environmental</strong> Awareness <strong>Centre</strong> may be used.<br />

Description: Adequate training can reinforce the knowledge and it will make everyone from<br />

medicinal fraternity to move towards the self compliance to BMW rules laid by MoEF, GoI. A<br />

series of awareness and training programmes should be carried out to cover everyone and sensitise<br />

them on BMW management. Schedules are to be arranged as such that the awareness regarding<br />

the BMW rules, 1998 becomes more intense. <strong>Action</strong>s to be taken are mentioned below:<br />

1. Programmes on Awareness and Training to be carried out by local municipal body along with<br />

regulatory bodies like Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Central Pollution Control<br />

Board (CPCB), various stakeholders from all Health Care Facilities, related Associations and<br />

General Public. Every year such event can be organized. This will help in sensitizing medical<br />

associations with regulations requirements and facilities in local area for achieving the same.<br />

2. After that each big Hospital could be identified in each ward and similarly it can spread the<br />

awareness and train the medical staff with the help from Medical Associations and Pharmacists<br />

Association. Awareness and Training Programmes could be carried out in every quarter of<br />

respective financial year.<br />

3. While carrying out such programmes, whole staff would be benefited by undergoing such<br />

programmes<br />

4. General public visits HCFs for various purposes i.e. for treatment, to visit their relatives, for<br />

office work, people like security guards, suppliers, mechanics etc. also visit HCFs on<br />

requirement. Their involvement would make them conscious and hence programmes would be<br />

highly effective.<br />

5. Posters, Pictures, Exhibitions can be arranged to have a multiplier effect on the front of<br />

spreading awareness on BMW.<br />

6. At every year end again the local municipal body would organise a programme and can review<br />

the progress and current status of that time. Accordingly new targets could be identified to<br />

make it continual activity.<br />

7. Awareness and training programmes as well as quarterly compliance checks at the common<br />

BMW management facility should be conducted to train staff at the facilities.<br />

8. Awareness campaigns should be conducted to educate students on household BMW and<br />

effective disposal of the same..<br />
