The main institutions and government bodies that are responsible for solid waste management in Pune<br />

are Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Pune Municipal Corporation as well as the generators<br />

of the waste and also the waste management service providers. The institutional profiles of some the<br />

organizations involved directly and indirectly in Solid Waste Management in Pune have been attached in<br />

Annexure IV.<br />

7.1.1 Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB)<br />

MPCB is the authority for implementing and monitoring compliance of the rules pertaining to the<br />

management of solid waste in the city. Maharashtra Pollution Control Board was established on 7th<br />

September, 1970 under the provisions of Maharashtra Prevention of Water Pollution Act, 1969. The<br />

Board Consists of Chairman, Member Secretary and Official and Non-Official Members as laid down<br />

under the provisions of section 4 of the Water (P&CP) Act, 1974 and section 5 of Air (P&CP) Act, 1981.<br />

Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) implements various environmental legislations in the state,<br />

including some of the provisions under <strong>Environmental</strong> (Protection) Act, 1986 and the rules framed there<br />

under such as, Biomedical Waste (M&H) Rules, 1998, Hazardous Waste (M&H) Rules, 2000, Municipal<br />

Solid Waste Rules, 2000 etc. MPCB functions under the administrative control of Environment<br />

Department of Government of Maharashtra. The Organizational Structure of MPCB is shown in Figure<br />

7.7.<br />
