From the Figure 5.6 it can be seen for Aerobic Composting, that although the total capital and operating and
management costs are the least, this technology has maximum space requirements. In large urban areas, space
constraint is one of the major problems in the implementation of the project. Further the net earnings
incurred from this technology are also meagre. The urban areas provide for lesser market opportunities for
the manure generated from aerobic composting projects.
Thus this low-cost operating system is very effective solution for waste management in cities with availability
of open spaces and where markets can be created for the manure generated through this process. Hence the
successful application of composting plants depends upon availability of space and the setting up of markets
for manures.
Biomethanation technology, in spite of being characterized with high capital costs and high O&M, has
maximum net earnings. This technology has the added advantage of lower space requirements as compared
to both aerobic as well as vermi-composting processes. On the basis of the waste generated at each ward
level, Table 5.2 provides an approximate estimate of the area requirements and the possibilities of applying a
biomethanation plants.
