Hotel waste is segregated into three different categories as, bio-degradable waste, non-biodegradable<br />

but recyclable waste and non-recyclable waste. The percentage of waste segregation at various<br />

sources in Pune is explained in Figure 3.14. Commercial establishments like hotels, wedding halls etc<br />

contribute to waste segregation more than the residential units. Almost 80 % hotels are practicing<br />

segregation. Slums contribute the least.<br />

In areas where mixed waste is generated at the generators level, the segregation and separation is<br />

predominantly done by rag pickers. The rag pickers segregate waste at various levels/ stages like at<br />

door step collection, at Ghanta Trucks, community bins and also at disposal site. The extent of waste<br />

collected by the rag-pickers at different levels can be shown in Figure 3.15.<br />
