Direct dischargs into ground water (i.e., without percolation through<br />

the ground or subsoil) of organophosphotous compounds, organohalogen<br />

compounds <strong>and</strong> substances which may form such compounds in the aquatic<br />

environment, substances which possess carcinogenic, mutagenic or<br />

teratogenic properties in or via the aquatic environment <strong>and</strong> mineral<br />

oils <strong>and</strong> hydrocarbons is prohibited. Appiropriatm measures deemed<br />

necessary to prevent indirect discharge into ground water (i.e., via<br />

percolation through ground or subsoil) of these substances shall be<br />

taken by member countries.<br />

Petroleum products must not be present in salmonid <strong>and</strong> cyprinid waters<br />

in such quantities that they: (1) form a visible film on the surface<br />

of the water or form coatings on the be& of water-courru <strong>and</strong> lakes,<br />

(2) impart a detectable 'hydrocarbon" taste to fish <strong>and</strong>, (3) produce<br />

harmful effects in fish.<br />

The m<strong>and</strong>atory specifications for petroleum hydrocarbons specify that<br />

they may not be prasent in shellfish water in such quantities as to<br />

produce a visible film on the surface of the water <strong>and</strong>/or a deposit on<br />

quantity, nature, physical <strong>and</strong> chemical characteristfca <strong>and</strong> origin of<br />

such <strong>waste</strong>, <strong>and</strong> of the methoda <strong>and</strong> sites rued for disposing of such<br />
