68.3.2.2 Chronic Toxicologic Effects<br />

No studies were found in the literature dealing with the effects<br />

of long-term exposure to hydraulic fluid oil in humans.<br />

68.3.3 Toxicology of Hydraulic Fluid Components<br />

The composition of hydraulic fluid varies greatly <strong>and</strong> usually<br />

depends upon the specific conditions of use. Since the exact<br />

composition of the oils is constantly changing.<strong>and</strong> difficult to define,<br />

the toxicology of component classes are briefly discussed below. See<br />

Table 68-4 for the acute toxicity data of specific compounds.<br />

Organic esters generally found in lubricating oils <strong>and</strong> hydraulic<br />

fluids include a&pates, sebacates <strong>and</strong> dibasic acid esters. Dibasic<br />

acid esters are primarily non-toxic via ingestion or skin absorption.<br />

The only effect noted from dermal contact may be .a drying of the skin<br />

(1822). Di(2-hexoxyethyl)succinate is a sebacate which is relatively<br />

non-toxic to animals. In humans it is expected to have a low toxicity.<br />

Large doses may produce CNS depression, nausea, vomiting <strong>and</strong> transient<br />

liver <strong>and</strong> kidney injury (12). Not all neopentyl esters have been<br />

tested for toxicity, but studies with trimethylopropane ester showed a<br />

toxic level comparable to that of mineral oil (1822).<br />

Ingestion of polyglycols is unlikely, but small amounts produce no<br />

toxic effect. No cases of skin irritation or skin sensitization have<br />

been reported; mild irritation to the eyelid has been reported but<br />

effects were only transitory. Usually no inhalation hazard exists but<br />

at high temperatures, where vapors are likely to form, adequate<br />

ventilation should be provided (1822).<br />

Ucor@ fluids are a mixture of polyalkylene glycols <strong>and</strong> diestars.<br />

50-HB-260, 50-HB-5100, 25-H-2005 <strong>and</strong> 75-H-1400 are low in single-dose<br />

oral toxicity with LD,, values for the male rat ranging from 5.95 to<br />

>64 mL/kg bw; oral LD,, values for the rabbit range from 1.77 to 35.4<br />

mL/kg bw. The lower molecular weight compounds are more toxic. A<br />

dose-related .granular degeneration of the cytoplasm of the smooth<br />

muscle in the intestinal wall was noted in dogs fed 25-H-2005 for 2<br />

years. The significance of this finding is unknown. No other adverse<br />

effects were shown. The only adverse effect observed in rats fed up to<br />

0.5 g/kg/day of 25-H-2005 for two years was a slight growth depression<br />

in females (12).<br />
