Health <strong>and</strong> Safety Plan<br />

Solid Waste Mangement Unit Assessment<br />

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina -<br />

Employee protection for this project includes St<strong>and</strong>ard Safe Work Practices <strong>and</strong> Personal<br />

Protective Equipment (PPE) which will be addressed in this section.<br />

Extreme Weather<br />

Condition Procedures, Work Limitations, <strong>and</strong> Exposure Evaluation will be covered in Sections<br />

7 through 9 of this report.<br />

6.1 St<strong>and</strong>ard Safe Work Practices<br />

St<strong>and</strong>ard safe work <strong>and</strong> personal hygiene practices that will be followed include:<br />

Eating, drinking, chewing gum or tobacco, smoking or any activity that increases the<br />

probability of h<strong>and</strong>-to-mouth transfer <strong>and</strong> ingestion of material is prohibited in any area<br />

designated as contaminated, unless authorized by the site <strong>health</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>safety</strong> manager.<br />

H<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> face must be thoroughly washed upon leaving the work area.<br />

Contact lenses shall not be worn onsite.<br />

Contact with surfaces suspected of being contaminated should be avoided. Whenever<br />

possible, employees should not walk through puddles, leachate or discolored surfaces,<br />

or lean, sit or place equipment on drums, containers or soil suspected of being<br />

contaminated.<br />

Medicine <strong>and</strong> alcohol can exacerbate the effects of exposure to toxic chemicals.<br />

Prescribed drugs should not be taken by personnel on cleanup or response operations<br />

where the potential for absorption, inhalation, or ingestion of toxic substances exists<br />

unless specifically approved by a qualified physician. Consumption of alcoholic<br />

beverages or use of illegal drugs will not be allowed before or during operations.<br />

6.2 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)<br />

The selection of personal protective equipment is based on information collected from the site<br />

screening.<br />
