review difficulties and means for improvement and to determine conditions for continuance in the<br />

program.<br />

III. Approval for Student Teaching<br />

A. Student teaching is among the final requirements for a teaching certificate. It is part of the professional<br />

education requirements. It must be done during one of the last two semesters in the program.<br />

B. Undergraduates must complete EDUC 4240 Action Research and EDUC/INDC 4290, Classroom<br />

Management, during student teaching.<br />

C. Admission to student teaching is not automatic upon completion of required courses. It is contingent<br />

upon approval by the Teacher Education Committee. All course work listed below must be completed<br />

with a grade of ―C‖ or better with the exception of EDUC 4301, 4311, 5313, 5314, 6302, and 6312 which<br />

require a ―B‖ or better for satisfactory completion. The following requirements must be met:<br />

1. Satisfaction of all requirements for admission to and retention in the Teacher Education Program.<br />

2. For undergraduate and post baccalaureate students, completion of EDUC 4301 or 4311, 4312, 4345,<br />

and EDRE 4330 (if it is required in the program) in addition to those teaching field requirements<br />

listed below.<br />

3. For graduate students, completion of EDUC 6301, 6302 or 6312, 6304 and EDSP 5302 in addition to<br />

those teaching field requirements listed below.<br />

4. If undergraduate, completion of at least 21 semester hours with a GPA of 2.5 or above in the teaching<br />

field. If graduate, successful completion of the TExES content test in the teaching field or at least 21<br />

semester hours in each teaching field with a GPA of 2.5 or above in each teaching field.<br />

5. If undergraduate, a GPA of 2.5 or higher on all professional education course work (EDUC courses)<br />

with no grade lower than a ―C‖ and a ―B‖ or better in EDUC 4301 or 4311. If graduate, a GPA of 3.0<br />

or higher on all professional education course work with no grade lower than a ―C‖ and a ―B‖ or<br />

better in EDUC 5313, 5314, 6302, or 6312.<br />

6. A completed ―Application for Student Teaching‖ form on file in the School of Education office by<br />

the second week in February of the prior school year for Fall student teaching and by the second<br />

week in September for Spring student teaching.<br />

7. Fitness for teaching as judged by performance in the classroom and in course-related field<br />

experience.<br />

8. If seeking Bilingual Education, Spanish, or French certification, a passing score on the appropriate<br />

language examination.<br />

9. If seeking EC-6 certification, completion of all required EDEC courses and the following courses:<br />

EDRE 4310/5310, 4350/5350, and EDUC 5430 or INDC 4330.<br />

10. If seeking ESL certification, completion of all required ESL courses.<br />

11. If seeking Special Education certification, completion of all required EDSP courses.<br />

12. If seeking all-level, middle grades, or high school certification, completion of EDUC 4354/5354.<br />

IV. Approval for State Certification Exams<br />

A. To receive state certification, teacher candidates must successfully complete the required state<br />

certification exams in both pedagogy and content areas. Bilingual education students must also pass the<br />

BTLPT (Bilingual Target Language Proficiency Test). High school certification in Spanish or French<br />

requires successful completion of the appropriate LOTE (Languages Other than English) test. High<br />

school certification in Spanish requires successful completion of the appropriate LOTE (Languages<br />

Other than English) test.<br />

B. <strong>HBU</strong> teacher candidates are not allowed to take these exams without authorization from the department.<br />

C. To apply to take state certification exams, teacher candidates must:<br />

1. Have met all requirements for teacher education admission and retention, and for student teaching (if<br />

applicable).<br />

2. Contact the Dean of the School of Education for approval to take the exam. If approved, registration<br />

may be completed online at http://www.texes.ets.org/.<br />

D. To apply to take the BTLPT or LOTE exams, teacher candidates must meet all requirements<br />

listed in A-C.<br />
