JMC 2324 Editing News Copy<br />
Introduces the fundamentals of news media copyediting for grammar, punctuation, style rules, condensing, rewriting,<br />
and headline writing.<br />
JMC 2414 Reporting and Writing I<br />
Prerequisites: ENGL 1313 and ENGL 1323<br />
Teaches the fundamentals of news reporting and writing. Lectures, discussions and laboratory work provide training in<br />
the development and organization of basic news stories and in meeting deadlines. This course includes one semester<br />
hour credit for laboratory sessions.<br />
JMC 3302 Multimedia Production<br />
Prerequisite: JMC 2414 (JOUR 2303)<br />
This course will emphasize both traditional journalistic values and skills, while also preparing students to function in a<br />
dynamic and evolving multimedia environment. Assignments are designed to help students to work across multiplemedia<br />
platforms, including broadcast, print, and online journalism. The goal is to develop a range of techniques that<br />
includes research, writing, editing, and presentation for news, corporate and strategic communication in print, audio,<br />
video and online. Students produce projects that may be distributed and/or entered in competitions.<br />
JMC 3325 Principals of Public Relations<br />
This course teaches the theory and practice of public relations, how public relations operates in organizations, its<br />
impact on publics, and its function in society. The course will also focus on professional development of the field;<br />
concepts, issues, and principles in the practice; and models and theories guiding the practice.<br />
JMC 3365 Video Production I<br />
Introduces fundamental single camera/film style production concepts to the Multimedia Production students. This<br />
course teaches the theory and practices relative to professional video standards and introduces practical hands-on<br />
applications. Studio/Field applications will include cameras, microphones, lighting, audio, graphics, non-linear<br />
editing, and switching. Additional lab fee and external hard drive required.<br />
JMC 3366 Video Production II<br />
Introduces multi - camera studio and field production concepts to the Multimedia Production students. This course<br />
teaches the theory and practices relative to professional video standards and introduces practical hands-on applications<br />
in situations requiring more than one camera. Advanced applications of video production including scriptwriting,<br />
directing and production of live events on campus ranging from operas to athletic activities.<br />
JMC 3414 Reporting and Writing II<br />
Prerequisite: JMC 2414<br />
This course is designed to enhance the reporting and writing skills developed in JMC (24XX). Interviewing techniques<br />
are emphasized. This course includes one semester hour credit for laboratory sessions.<br />
JMC 4181, 4281, 4381 Special Topics<br />
Prerequisite: permission of the instructor<br />
JMC 4314 Feature Writing<br />
Prerequisite: JMC 2414 or permission of the instructor<br />
This course helps students learn the effective use of dialogue, development of narrative techniques, including vivid<br />
description and detail, and comparison and contrast in developing the feature story. Exercises in this course are<br />
designed to help students develop techniques to involve the reader emotionally through human interest including<br />
drama, pathos, empathy, humor, and curiosity.<br />
JMC 4315 Public Affairs Reporting<br />
Prerequisite: JMC 2414 or permission of the instructor<br />
This course emphasizes public affairs reporting in its traditional role as the staple of American journalism while<br />
stressing the increased and evolving role of journalists, working in the age of information, to go beyond gathering,<br />
organizing, and presenting facts, to finding ways to present increasingly complicated information in ways that help the<br />
public to better understand and manage 21 st century issues that dominate the news. Public affairs issues discussed in<br />
this course include, but are not limited to, public agencies, law enforcement, courts, local, state, and national<br />
government, education, science, the environment, medicine, health, and business, and the global issues of energy,<br />
hunger, health, war and terrorism.<br />
