Curriculum and Instruction with Certification in Special Education (EC-12)<br />

NOTE: Teaching certificates are issued by the State of Texas, not the <strong>University</strong>. The state is currently changing<br />

some certification levels and requirements. In order to meet any new guidelines from the Texas Education<br />

Agency, the <strong>University</strong> may change requirements described in this <strong>Catalog</strong>. Students should check with the<br />

School of Education office for current requirements.<br />

This option leads to both the MEd degree in Curriculum and Instruction and certification in Special Education<br />

(EC-12). It prepares educators to teach students with all handicapping conditions on all grade levels.<br />

Applicants with a BS or BA degree who do not hold a valid Texas teaching certificate must meet all admission,<br />

retention, and certification requirements for teacher education. Applicants who are currently certified to teach in<br />

Texas are not required to take the THEA or apply to the teacher education program.<br />

All applicants are required to meet admission requirements for the MEd programs.<br />

The following courses must be completed with no grade less than ―C‖:<br />

EDSP 5302 Survey of Exceptional Children<br />

EDSP 5306 Language and Concept Development in Young Children<br />

EDSP 5311 Diagnostic and Prescriptive Teaching for Exceptional Children<br />

EDSP 5319 Teaching Strategies in Special Education<br />

EDSP 5335 Growth, Abnormalities, Identification, and Evaluation of Early Childhood<br />

EDSP 5336 Instructional Techniques and Assisted Technology for Physically Impaired Learners<br />

EDSP 5351 Emergent Literacy<br />

EDUC 5331 Math for Preadolescents<br />

EDUC 6302 Elementary School Curriculum and Instruction<br />

EDUC 6304 Children, Adolescents, and Learning.<br />

In addition to this course work, certification requires student teaching or an approved equivalent and successful<br />

completion of content area and pedagogy state exams.<br />

ACP Students must complete the following courses after acceptance into the Teacher Education Program.<br />

Besides these courses, ACP students must pass the required content area and PPR state certification exams.<br />
