To earn professional certification as an Educational Diagnostician, the student must complete the thirty-six (36)<br />

graduate hours listed above and earn the MEd degree.<br />

A student may enter this program by meeting the requirements for admission to the graduate program.<br />

Prior to admission to an educator preparation program leading to the Educational Diagnostician certification, an<br />

individual must<br />

Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education that at the time of<br />

attendance was accredited or otherwise approved by an accrediting organization recognized by the<br />

Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board;<br />

Hold a valid classroom teaching certificate; and<br />

Meet the requirements for admission to an educator preparation program under Chapter 227<br />

Effective December 23, 2009<br />

Note: In order to meet new guidelines from the State, requirements described in this <strong>Catalog</strong> may change.<br />

READING EDUCATION<br />

To earn a degree in Reading Education, a student must complete the following 36 semester hours with no grade<br />

less than ―C‖: EDUC 6304, 6310, 6320, EDRE 5301, 5304, 5330, 5352, 6304, 6305, and nine additional hours<br />

which depends on the student‘s existing certification. A student already possessing an elementary education or<br />

EC-4 or EC-6 certificate must complete EDUC 6371 and six hours of approved graduate elective (ESL courses<br />

strongly recommended). A student already possessing an all-level, secondary education, middle grades, or high<br />

school certificate must complete EDUC 6370, EDRE 5310 and EDRE 5320. If courses equivalent to EDRE<br />

5310 and 5320 have been taken for middle grade certification, approved electives may be substituted.<br />

To earn the Texas Professional Certificate as a Reading Specialist in addition to the degree requirement stated<br />

above, a student must have a valid Texas teaching certificate, three years of successful teaching experience in an<br />

accredited elementary or secondary school, and a passing score on the appropriate state certification examination.<br />

Certification as a Reading Specialist for a person who already holds a master‘s degree and a valid Texas teaching<br />

certificate may be obtained by completion of the following courses: EDRE 5301, 5304, 5330, 5352, 6304, 6305<br />

and EDUC 6310. The student who already possesses elementary or EC-4 or EC-6 teacher certification must also<br />

complete EDUC 6371. The student who already possesses all-level, secondary, middle grades, or high school<br />

teacher certification must also complete EDRE 5310, 5320, and ECUC 6370.<br />
