DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION AND RHETORIC<br />

The Department of Communication and Rhetoric offers major/minor in Communication and Communication or<br />

Journalism and Mass communication. The focus of the curriculum is to develop essential Rhetoric skills.<br />

Communication and Rhetoric<br />

The speech major is designed for students interested in either rhetorical studies or communication systems. The<br />

department features a competitive and mock trial team, an opportunity for internships, and departmental honors.<br />

Successful completion of an exit exam is required for graduation.<br />

Forensics and Mock Trial Team<br />

<strong>HBU</strong> Mock Trial is a university team providing student the opportunity to hone critical thinking, persuasive, and<br />

acting skills in a competitive atmosphere. Weekly practices prepare the team for local, state, and national<br />

competitions.<br />

Communication Internships<br />

Internships (COMM 4373) provide students with the opportunity to gain directed work experience in a variety of<br />

public and private organizations. Prior to the semester in which the student will do an internship, the students must<br />

1) apply and receive permission of instructor during the semester prior to the beginning of the course, 2) submit a<br />

professional resume, 3) submit goals and objectives for the internship, and 4) arrange for an internship with the<br />

help of the instructor.<br />

Exit Exam<br />

All speech communication majors are required to pass an exit examination in order to graduate. Students must<br />

register with the chair of the department and take the exam when scheduled during the semester before graduation.<br />

Departmental Honors in Communication and Rhetoric<br />

Completing the honors program in Speech Communication permits students to enrich their educational experience<br />

and to receive academic recognition for electing the additional challenging course work. To qualify for the honors<br />

program the students must have complete 64 semester hours for credit (at least 32 hours at <strong>HBU</strong>); have completed<br />

COMM 1313 or 1323, 2313, and 3323; have a least a cumulative 3.25 GPA and a 3.5 GPA for speech<br />

communication; have a desire to pursue further studies in the subject; have good research skills and the ability to<br />

complete self-directed work; and be accepted by the departmental honors committee. To complete the program<br />

students must maintain a cumulative 3.25 GPA and a 3.5 GPA for speech communication classes; complete<br />

contract work at <strong>HBU</strong> in two 3000 and/or 4000 level speech communication classes; and complete HONR 4399<br />

Honors Thesis and the oral thesis defense. Upon successful completion of the program, the student‘s bound<br />

Honors Thesis will be placed in the <strong>HBU</strong> library and the honors program will be noted on the student‘s transcript.<br />
