ART 2238, 2248, 3238, 3248, 4238, 4248 Life Drawing
Since the human figure is one of the most enduring themes of the visual arts, and it can be applied to almost any
content of creativity, a knowledge of and a development of the ability to draw and render the human figure should be a
basic undertaking for a student of studio art. A student should take instructions from a master artist focusing on the use
of models in a complete variety of ways to draw the human figure. Also, drawing and creating images of the figure
from the imagination with expressive overtones is an effective means of life drawing. A complete course for imagery
of the human forms should include many variations of perceptual and conceptual means of creativity. Therefore,
working from the model and from memory is a considerable approach to the subject of the human figure. It can be an
unending source of art forms and subjects for artists throughout an extended career in art. The figure drawing class can
include and should include most or all of the following: gesture drawing, conture, cross conture, flash pose, memory
drawing, descriptive poses, moving action, modeled drawing, descriptive poses, quick contour, extended contour, the
long composition, studies of body parts, water color studies, and oil studies.
