EDUC 6308 Distance Learning<br />
Prerequisites: EDUC 5301 and EDAD/EDUC 5306<br />
Information acquisition focuses on case studies and research efforts documenting effective and ineffective applications<br />
of distance learning technologies. Application of research findings will lead to the development of a distance learning<br />
prospectus. By participating in distance learning demonstrations and simulations, students will apply and test<br />
instructional strategies appropriate for learners in a remote learning scenario. Problem-solving activities will include<br />
delivery system design and program design.<br />
EDUC 6310 The School in a Multicultural Society<br />
This course is designed to develop understanding and appreciation of cultural differences (including values, attitudes,<br />
behaviors, abilities, and learning styles) present in both the general public and schools so that students can be more<br />
effective in relating to persons of various cultures, promoting multicultural understanding, and facilitating maximal<br />
learning and personal development for all of their students/clients. Both theoretical constructs and practical applications<br />
are emphasized.<br />
EDUC 6312 Secondary School Curriculum and Instruction<br />
Students will develop an integrated and in-depth understanding of principles of curriculum and instruction, as well as<br />
practical experiences in instructional design for secondary school contexts and learners. Multiple approaches to<br />
learning, the roles of teachers in the teaching-learning process, as well as current Texas state curriculum requirements<br />
and guidelines are explored. The effective use of media/technology is included. Fieldwork is required.<br />
EDUC 6320 Research Techniques and Procedures<br />
A study of investigations relating to schooling with applications suitable to the role of the principal. Includes<br />
examination of reports from abstracts and original sources, valid research criteria in making written evaluations, and<br />
applications in specific field settings.<br />
EDUC 6322 Curriculum and Instruction: Grades K-12<br />
This course provides a study of influencing factors and guiding principles for curriculum and instruction in grades K-<br />
12. It includes practical experience in instructional design as well as first-hand teaching experiences. It is designed to<br />
provide integrated and in-depth understandings of principles and processes for curriculum and instruction, as well as<br />
practical experiences in planning and facilitating learning (instructional design, media/technology usage, and classroom<br />
teaching). The role of the student and teacher in the teacher-learning process as well as current Texas curriculum<br />
requirements, including Essential Knowledge and Skills, are explored.<br />
EDUC 6330 Teaching Methodology for the Professional<br />
Structured to meet the needs of those professionals who must design, organize, and present materials to various target<br />
populations, this graduate level course focuses on teaching methods, media, and evaluation of the learning process.<br />
EDUC 6370 Critical Issues in Teaching Reading in the Elementary School<br />
An analysis of issues important to effective development of reading abilities during the elementary school years.<br />
Emphasis is placed upon teaching comprehension processes and understanding factors which affect comprehension<br />
processes.<br />
EDUC 6371 Critical Issues in Teaching Reading in the Secondary School<br />
An analysis of issues important to effective development of reading abilities during the secondary school years.<br />
Emphasis is placed upon teaching comprehension processes and understanding factors which affect comprehension<br />
processes.<br />

ENGL 1303 Basic Grammar and Composition<br />
A prerequisite course for enrollment in ENGL 1313 for students scoring below 500 on the SAT writing section or<br />
receiving less than a combined score of 8 (4 or more from each of the two graders) on the SAT Essay. Students with no<br />
available test scores will also be enrolled in ENGL 1303. ENGL 1303 is an introduction to the principles of<br />
composition accomplished through the study of grammar, standard English usage, and rhetorical techniques and<br />
strategies. This course emphasizes basic grammar and composition and focuses on sentence structure and on<br />
organizing and developing the short essay. ENGL 1303 does not meet the Smith College requirements for either the<br />
BA or the BS degree but does carry elective credit.<br />
