Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)<br />

The BSN program prepares graduates to promote health and healing through direct care and management and<br />

coordination of care for individuals, families, groups, and communities. There is a core curriculum required of all<br />

undergraduate nursing students. The BSN students take additional courses designed to develop the proficiencies<br />

for baccalaureate level practice. The program prepares graduates to take the examination for Registered Nurse<br />

(R.N.) licensure offered by the Texas Board of Nursing.<br />

Admission Procedures and Polices for Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing<br />

To enter the initial courses in the baccalaureate (Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree) program which have<br />

laboratories that do not involve direct patient care (NURS 2222, 2323, 3212, and 3303), applicants are required<br />

to have:<br />

• a completed Undergraduate Admission application on file.<br />

• satisfactorily completed the prerequisites with grades of ―C‖ or above.<br />

• a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on all pre-requisites and university course work<br />

attempted.<br />

• scores of greater than or equal to 75 on the HESI Admission Assessment tests for Reading Comprehension,<br />

Grammar, and Math.<br />

• been selected for program entry through the candidate ranking process.<br />

• met the Reading, Math, and Computer proficiency requirements for the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

• a clear criminal background check and no evidence of drug or alcohol use/abuse.<br />

Progression in the Program<br />

To progress into the nursing courses that involve direct patient care, the students are required to:<br />

• Have and maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 or above.<br />

• No grade less than a ―C‖ in the nursing courses.<br />

• A satisfactory performance on the Math Proficiency Exam for Nurses.<br />

• Demonstrate proficiency in the required competencies at the Novice Level, and Graduating Level Curriculum<br />

Checkpoints by passing an examination, demonstrating safe practice and critical thinking while performing<br />

nursing skills, and providing a portfolio at each level.<br />

• Have a clear criminal background check and no evidence of drug or alcohol use/abuse.<br />

• Complete hospital orientation modules, including any specific orientation requirements for assigned clinical<br />

agency.<br />

• Current CPR for health care providers, including newborn, infant, pediatrics and adult and AED training.<br />

• Updated required immunizations.<br />

• Updated annual tuberculosis screening.<br />

• Current statement of good health.<br />

Graduation<br />

Candidates eligible for graduation with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree are required to:<br />

• Complete a minimum of 128 semester hours for the baccalaureate in nursing degree with a GPA of 2.5 or<br />

higher.<br />

• Have earned a prescribed number of points in the Nursing Student Association and demonstrated competence<br />

as required for the curriculum checkpoints.<br />

• Apply to take the State Board Examination for RN licensure.<br />

• Complete all general requirements for graduation as outlined in the <strong>Catalog</strong>.<br />
