FRENCH<br />
FREN 1314, 1324 Beginning French Proficiency<br />
Focus is on achieving beginning proficiency in communication in French developing the skills of listening, speaking,<br />
reading, writing, viewing, and showing in the interpersonal, interpretive and presentational communicative modes and<br />
on acquiring an initial knowledge and understanding of cultures of the French speaking world. Students learn to use<br />
and understand the language necessary for expressing basic needs, wants, and courtesies. They practice vocabulary and<br />
structures for meeting immediate survival needs. Not open to students with more than two years of high school French<br />
or with proficiency level above Novice.<br />
FREN 2314, 2324 Continuing French Proficiency<br />
Prerequisites: FREN 1314 and 1324 or the equivalent.<br />
Focus is on increasing proficiency in communication in French using the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing,<br />
viewing, and showing in the interpersonal, interpretive and presentational communicative modes and on acquiring a<br />
knowledge and understanding of cultures of the French speaking world. Students ask and answer questions on everyday<br />
topics, initiate and respond to simple statements, and maintain basic conversations. Students learn to comprehend<br />
utterances in areas of immediate need and in situations where context aids understanding. They gain insights into the<br />
culture of the French speaking world through interactive activities and through discussions and readings in the<br />
language. Not open to students with proficiency level above Intermediate.<br />
FRESHMAN YEAR SEMINAR<br />
FYS 1100 Freshman Year Seminar<br />
This course is designed to help the first-semester freshman student adjust to the academic workload at <strong>Houston</strong> <strong>Baptist</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong>. It offers an interactive approach to facilitating success in areas such as personal strengths, as well as<br />
academic, spiritual, social, and emotional development. Questionnaires, inventories, discussions, presentations, and<br />
daily opportunities for student interactions are used as tools for academic growth and self discovery.<br />
GEOGRAPHY<br />
GEOG 3302 World Geography<br />
This course acquaints students with the breadth of geography by examining the physical environment, environmental<br />
issues, and the cultural, economic, and political factors that influence human activities and societies.<br />
GOVERNMENT<br />
GOVT 1313 Introduction to Government<br />
An introduction to major concepts and institutions of governance and to techniques of political analysis. Emphasis is<br />
placed on a comparative study of governmental processes in the United States and other major political systems.<br />
GOVT 2313 American and Texas Government<br />
A survey of the structure and operation of the national and Texas governments. This course is required for certification<br />
to teach in the public schools of Texas.<br />
GOVT 2334 Campaigns and Elections<br />
An analysis of the American electoral system and political campaigns. This course focuses on political parties,<br />
campaign strategy, the electoral process, public opinion, and voter turnout.<br />
GOVT 2343 Public Policy<br />
This course will examine policy issues at the national level including crime, welfare, healthcare, the environment,<br />
taxation, immigration, defense, and education. The course will not only emphasize policy content, but also will focus<br />
upon the policy process, the influence of various political personalities on shaping public policy, and policy evaluation.<br />
GOVT 3324 State and Urban Politics<br />
A study of contemporary issues and problems facing state and metropolitan governments. Analysis of key political<br />
institutions, community power structures, urban affairs, trends in social and economic programs, and issues related to<br />
state and city governance in a federal system.<br />
