Between 1590 and 1600, he aajuired <strong>the</strong> estates <strong>of</strong> Wester Gouidie and Introd.<br />
K<strong>in</strong>gennie. Of <strong>the</strong>se, <strong>the</strong> former was bought from <strong>the</strong> Car-<br />
Th^purch^a <strong>in</strong>ichaels and Dunmuirs for some 9,000 merks <strong>in</strong> I.J91-9.3, and<br />
1600.'°*^°'^^' <strong>the</strong> latter from <strong>the</strong> Guthries for 1G,000 merks <strong>in</strong> lUUO. It<br />
was from K<strong>in</strong>gennie tliat lie and his descendants <strong>the</strong>reafter<br />
took <strong>the</strong>ir designation until <strong>the</strong> purchase <strong>of</strong> Easter Powrie by his grandson<br />
<strong>in</strong> 16G2, and its erection <strong>in</strong>to a new barony <strong>of</strong> Wedderbnrn <strong>in</strong> 1708. His<br />
town house was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rgait <strong>of</strong> Dundee, and stood until denWi^hed some<br />
few years back, when a stone, sculptured with his arms and those <strong>of</strong> his<br />
wife, which formed part <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fire-places, was set <strong>in</strong> an outside<br />
•wall. Illustrations show<strong>in</strong>g this stone, part <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ceil<strong>in</strong>"s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
house, and some sculptured stones at K<strong>in</strong>gennie, will be found post, at pp.<br />
128 and 427. K<strong>in</strong>gennie died <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early part <strong>of</strong> 1G:2G, leav<strong>in</strong>g a will,<br />
which I have not discovered, <strong>in</strong> which, as appears from o<strong>the</strong>r documents<br />
<strong>the</strong>re were legacies to <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ister and poor <strong>of</strong> Dundee. He had married'<br />
almost immediately on com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> age <strong>in</strong> 1582, Helen Ramsay, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />
Alexander Ramsay <strong>of</strong> Dundee and grand-daughter <strong>of</strong> Mr. George Speus, and<br />
by her, who died between 1618 and 1625, had issue eleven chiidreu. From<br />
<strong>the</strong> two eldest sons spr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gennie and Blackness l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong> tjie family, <strong>the</strong><br />
former <strong>of</strong> which be<strong>ca</strong>me ext<strong>in</strong>ct <strong>in</strong> male l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> 1761. The two next sons were<br />
Peter, who married Helen Lovell, but died s.p. <strong>in</strong> 1629, and William, ulio married<br />
Jean Pierson, but died also without issue <strong>in</strong> 1630.<br />
The rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g son, John, afterwards Sir John <strong>of</strong> Gosford.^ rose to great<br />
dist<strong>in</strong>ction <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e. He was born <strong>in</strong> 1599,<br />
