James <strong>Wedderburn</strong> [1495?— 1553J,-<br />

eldest son <strong>of</strong> James <strong>Wedderburn</strong> (ante p. 5),<br />

and Janet Barry, was born probably a little before 1500. The exact date <strong>ca</strong>nnot be fixed,<br />

but he matriculated at S. Andrew's <strong>in</strong> 1514, although he seems not to have proceeded to<br />

take any degree <strong>the</strong>re (S.A.K. 7). He was entered heir to his fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> an annual rent<br />

28 Sept. 1521 (D.P.B. 5), and is named as sitt<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> same assize with James<br />

Wedderbura, elder and younger, tiO Dec. <strong>in</strong> that year (D.B.R. 12). Ten years later,<br />

29 Nov. 1531, aga<strong>in</strong> as his fa<strong>the</strong>r's heir, ho got sas<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> a land <strong>in</strong> S. JMargaret's<br />

close, North Marketgait {ib. 42). He had been admitted a burgess <strong>of</strong> Dundee,<br />

17 Oct. 1517 (D.L.B. 3), and <strong>the</strong>reafter is <strong>of</strong>ten named <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> records <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> burgh<br />

* The registers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> parish <strong>of</strong> Burntisland have been searched from <strong>the</strong>ir earliest date 1672 down to 1750,<br />

but conta<strong>in</strong> no Wedilerburn entries. If, <strong>the</strong>refore, ei<strong>the</strong>r Francis or Robert <strong>Wedderburn</strong> had<br />

descendants, <strong>the</strong>y must have settled elsewhere. I f<strong>in</strong>d a reference to a Francis <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, who<br />

very probably is this son <strong>of</strong> David <strong>of</strong> Burntisland, <strong>in</strong> a volume <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Calendar <strong>of</strong> State Papers<br />

(Colonial Series, Ameri<strong>ca</strong> and <strong>the</strong> West Indies 1675-76, published <strong>in</strong> 1895, § 1217) where <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

recorded 10 Feb. 1672 <strong>the</strong> " Relation <strong>of</strong> Major Beaton, <strong>ca</strong>pta<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Assistance, frigate <strong>of</strong><br />
