She is named aga<strong>in</strong> as her husband's relict <strong>in</strong> a decree 9 Jan. 1655 [ih. 465)<br />
and <strong>in</strong> a discharge by iier, 23 June <strong>in</strong> that year, registered IS Feb. 1657 [ih.<br />
468 a). The date <strong>of</strong> her death does not appear, nor have I ascerta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
whe<strong>the</strong>r slie left any issue.<br />
4. James <strong>Wedderburn</strong> ]— [15G8 1644],i fourth son <strong>of</strong> Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong> and<br />
Janet My hi is first named, 22 Sept. 1 -'175, <strong>in</strong> regard to <strong>the</strong> settloment<strong>of</strong> an annual rent<br />
upon him (D.W. 11 i], and must, I th<strong>in</strong>k, be <strong>the</strong> James AVedderburn named as <strong>the</strong><br />

mention <strong>of</strong> him till 1584, <strong>in</strong> which year, Jan. 24, he is a witness, and designed<br />
"burgess ''<br />
although not 3'et admitted to <strong>the</strong> freedom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> burgh <strong>of</strong> Diuidce (D.P.B.<br />
236). He was a substitute <strong>in</strong> a settlement by his fa<strong>the</strong>r on his sister Kathar<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> this<br />
year, 15 April (D.W. 1 1 e), and is aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>ca</strong>lled '" burgess" when a witness, 13 June<br />
158f> (D.P.B. 251). In 15S8, May 27, he, " son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late clerk," ac(|uired an annual<br />
rent {ih. 272), and he had, <strong>of</strong> course, his share <strong>in</strong> his parents' estate (D.W. 12 ab,<br />
Ed. T. 5, 6). He is also named 1 3 Sept. 1595, as resign<strong>in</strong>g an annual-rent to James<br />
Durham <strong>of</strong> Pitkerro (D.P.B. 303 b) ; and 29 May 1506, he gnuits a feu-fernie to his<br />
bro<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> clerk, by a charter under his own hand (S.W. 112).-' He is oc<strong>ca</strong>sionally<br />
mentioned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Compt Buik <strong>of</strong> his bro<strong>the</strong>r David as hav<strong>in</strong>g various deal<strong>in</strong>gs with<br />
him (D.W. 3, 8 e). and as stand<strong>in</strong>g godfa<strong>the</strong>r to David's son James <strong>in</strong> 1601 {ib. \^g,<br />
\^ g). He was admitted a burgess <strong>of</strong> Dundee by <strong>the</strong> privilege <strong>of</strong> his late fa<strong>the</strong>r,<br />
23 Aug. 1603, <strong>the</strong> entry descrilj<strong>in</strong>g him as •' mer<strong>ca</strong>tor " (D.L. B. 31) ; and he was<br />
long a prom<strong>in</strong>ent merchant and citizen <strong>the</strong>re, acquir<strong>in</strong>g considerable property and<br />
tak<strong>in</strong>g an active part <strong>in</strong> municipal afl'airs.* In <strong>the</strong> same year, Dec. ll, one Henry<br />
Fyff was convicted <strong>of</strong> troublauce aga<strong>in</strong>st him <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> High Street and sentenced to beg<br />
liis pardon (D.C.B. 20), while nearly two years later. 7 Oct. 1605, <strong>the</strong>re was a feud<br />
between James and one Robert Kollok {ib. 30) ow<strong>in</strong>g to which James was not allowed<br />
to bear arms without a Avarrant from <strong>the</strong> Privy Council, which, however, he at once<br />
obta<strong>in</strong>ed {ib.)<br />
He took his share <strong>in</strong> family affairs and is <strong>of</strong>ten present on oc<strong>ca</strong>sions <strong>of</strong> family<br />
<strong>in</strong>terest. Thus he was party, with his brotiiers and sisters, to <strong>the</strong> discharge, 2 Feb.<br />
1604, anent <strong>the</strong> estate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir bro<strong>the</strong>r William (S.W. 157) and also to <strong>the</strong> contract<br />
<strong>in</strong> regard to William's death (ll.A.D. 61); 9 June 1609, he witnesses a sas<strong>in</strong>e<br />
given <strong>in</strong> implement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> marriage contract <strong>of</strong> his nephew James Wedderbuni<br />
