to him <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Diuuleo records until his return to Scotland ui 1002-03. Accord<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to <strong>the</strong> "Lockit Bulk" be was at once admitted burgess ni 1552 (D.L.I.. 16),<br />

no doubt, went abroad with his fa<strong>the</strong>i-, at whose death be was present, and<br />

his fa<strong>the</strong>r, and this did not take place till B Nov. 1553 (D.B.Il. 46].-^ From this time until<br />

his death, <strong>in</strong> Oct.-Xov. 1569, he lived <strong>in</strong> Dundee,' where be <strong>ca</strong>nicd on bus<strong>in</strong>ess as a<br />

merchant and shipowner,* and was an energetic member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community. W e f<strong>in</strong>d bim<br />

constantly act<strong>in</strong>- as bailie, councillor, picrmaster, master <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> almshouse,- witness to this or<br />

that transaction/-' <strong>ca</strong>utioner or arbitrator for otiier people,' while numerous references to<br />

actions by and aga<strong>in</strong>st bim shows that he bad a considerable bus<strong>in</strong>ess as a merchant. »<br />

H is<br />

house <strong>in</strong> Dundee was situate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Flukergait, and be seems to have had to make good his<br />

title to it bv <strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong> his "evidents" <strong>in</strong> 1554 (D.B.Il. 59-60, 62). He is also named,<br />

apparently' <strong>in</strong> regard to some Mnrraygait land (,b. 01 «), and certa<strong>in</strong>ly owned lands ' near<br />

<strong>the</strong> Dutterburn " 1555-69 (G.S.It. 33, 36), on <strong>the</strong> west <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cemetery (D.P.B. H 3), south<br />

<strong>of</strong> South Argvle'-ait (D.P.H. 141 a), and also a small piece on <strong>the</strong> road to loriar (S.W. \b,<br />

D P B 55 64" 74) His eldest son James is mentioned, 1573-74, as owner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " freelands<br />

<strong>of</strong> Aberbrothie <strong>in</strong> beretage " (K.P.C. 6, 7), but 1 do not f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r mentioned as <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

owner, although bis great grandson is retoured heir to him <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, many years after (D, B L.<br />

463). He is, howeyer, named as <strong>the</strong> owner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> thirteen acres <strong>in</strong> Dudop, which bis fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

He took his share <strong>in</strong> family affaii-s. Thus, 28 Nov. 1559, be bad <strong>the</strong> charge <strong>of</strong> his unc e<br />

Gilbert's -on John (D.P.B. 98); 23 Nov. 1560 be is nearest agnate on <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>rs side to<br />

David, son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Vi<strong>ca</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Dundee (D.B.Il. 104), to whom he bcc'^me eurafr (D.P.J.<br />

135) 6 Nbircb 1502, he is tutor to James, son <strong>of</strong> David <strong>Wedderburn</strong> lu Murraygait (D l..b<br />

112V)'' while 23 Jan. 1568(1).B.R. 157), he is named as hay<strong>in</strong>g decl<strong>in</strong>ed thccuratorsbip <strong>of</strong><br />

Robert Wed.lerburn younger, grandson <strong>of</strong> James Wedderbun. and .lanet Logan, though he<br />

must have consented later, as he se^ms to have been so actuig 15 Oct. m that yciU- (//.. 1 60).<br />
