Of <strong>the</strong> three sons <strong>of</strong> Robert WeJderburn and Janet Kyd <strong>the</strong> two younger were Peter<br />

and Kobert, <strong>the</strong> notary. Of <strong>the</strong>se,<br />

2. Peter <strong>Wedderburn</strong> [I5:i5 ?— 1604],' was certa<strong>in</strong>ly younger than his bro<strong>the</strong>r<br />

'iilexander, <strong>the</strong> clerk, but a good deal older tiian Robert, <strong>the</strong> notary, who was not born till<br />

1546.2 Jiis parentage is clearly fixed by <strong>the</strong> mention <strong>of</strong> Peter 'Weddcrburn, elder, as<br />

"my fa<strong>the</strong>r's bro<strong>the</strong>r" <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Compt Buik ol his nephew David (D.W. 3, 12 h\\,f). The<br />

earliest reference to him is dated 24 Sept. 1553, when he is culled "councillor," though<br />

still very young,^ after which he is not named till 5 Sept. 1558, when he gets a docrt'e<br />

(D.B.R. 82). From this date on he is repeatedly mentioned as witness, A-c* He was a<br />

merchant and seems at one time to have been <strong>in</strong> Norway, as, 16 June 1560, he br<strong>in</strong>gs an<br />

action v. Kyrtefer Anderson for non-delivery <strong>of</strong> -tOO bow-str<strong>in</strong>gs " sauld be him to <strong>the</strong>'^said<br />

Peter <strong>in</strong> Norruay " (D.B 11. 92) and later on, 22 Feb., 2 Sept. 1577, he is named as owner<br />

<strong>of</strong> one-sixteenth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ship " The Robert," and as purchaser <strong>of</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r ve.ssel " The Swan "<br />

(D.B R. 232, 230). He acquired from Robert <strong>Wedderburn</strong> grandson to James <strong>Wedderburn</strong><br />

(ante p. 72). a So\ith Argylegait land, 18 July 1573 (D.P.B. 183), and, 9 Mav 1575,<br />

got from <strong>the</strong> town a n<strong>in</strong>eteen years' tack <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Blackfriars yard or garden (D.B k". 216),3<br />

<strong>the</strong> term^be<strong>in</strong>g soon after, 2 Sept. <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same year, ex'tended to thirty-eight years<br />

(D.P.B. 170). On this oc<strong>ca</strong>sion he is <strong>ca</strong>lled " councillor and burgess " as he is also 1 Oct.<br />

1576 (D.B.R. 230 a). The " Lockit Buik," however, conta<strong>in</strong>s no entry <strong>of</strong> his admission.<br />

He is fii-st named as married (to ilargaret Kyuloch) G Feb. 1577, when <strong>the</strong>re is a judgment<br />

<strong>in</strong> favour <strong>of</strong> him and his wife {ih. 231) with whom he is named as gett<strong>in</strong>g ano<strong>the</strong>r sas<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

18 Nov. 1577 (D.I'.B. 200 a, D.B.R. 307j and as resign<strong>in</strong>g an annual-rent, 12 Feb. 1580<br />

(D.P.B. 212 i). He is named, 5 Aug. 1579, as deliver<strong>in</strong>g to John Lovell "ane lang<br />

spr<strong>in</strong>gzie rapper," which once belonged to Edward <strong>Wedderburn</strong> (D.B.R. 248), and 9 Sept<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same year, toge<strong>the</strong>r with his bro<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> clerk, as maternal next-<strong>of</strong>-k<strong>in</strong> to William<br />

Barre (D.B.R. 249). On IJune 1580 <strong>the</strong> council <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> burgh prepare for <strong>the</strong> visit <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g and order Peter <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, "ane <strong>of</strong> thair counsell, to beir thair handscynzie "<br />

(D.P.B. 195) and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same month, 22, 27, 29 June, he is <strong>ca</strong>utioner for his bro<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Robert, <strong>the</strong> notary, <strong>in</strong> a slander action by Robert?'. Alexander Ma<strong>the</strong>w (D B R. 253). (Jn<br />

31 Jan. l.'iSl Peter and his wife get a sas<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir favour (D.P.B. 213 a), and on<br />

21 Sept. resign certa<strong>in</strong> lands (ih. 223 e). On 22 March 1582 <strong>the</strong>y resign <strong>the</strong> South<br />

Argylegait land {ih. 220) which <strong>the</strong>y had acquired from Robert <strong>Wedderburn</strong> {ih.<br />

183), and, 25 May 1584, <strong>the</strong>y settle a North Quaygait property on <strong>the</strong>ir daughters<br />

Margaret and Janet (D.P.B. 245). O<strong>the</strong>r deal<strong>in</strong>gs by Peter and his wife are recorded,<br />

2 June 1586, when <strong>the</strong>y resign an annual-rent to Peter <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, younger, son<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> clerk {ib. 250) and 7 March 1589, when <strong>the</strong>y jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> a discharge to Jolui Sm ill<br />

<strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>othrie {ib. 313). There are many o<strong>the</strong>r references to Peter <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, e.ij.,<br />
