Earl <strong>of</strong> Lauderdale, and by her, who was born 24 Oct 17G8 (S.W. G98) and died at Part it.<br />

Birkhill 21 Oct. 1851 {Gent. Hag. vol. xxxvi., p. GfiS), had issue four sous and eight ^^"^^ ^'<br />

daughters, <strong>of</strong> whom, as we shall see, only one sou (<strong>the</strong> youngest, Fiodurick) survived, and<br />

only one daughter (Mathilda) had is^sue.<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> sons,<br />

1. "David Scrymgeour (6th) was bom at Gayfield Place, Ed<strong>in</strong>', ITtli August 1799.<br />

Register'd <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> West Church, parish <strong>of</strong> S' Cuthbert. l)icd at Ely, Fifeshire, ;<br />

9th April 1804."'<br />

2. " Alexander Scrymgeour (9th) was boni <strong>in</strong> Duke Street, Kdiu', IGth December<br />

1805. Died IGth Febniary 180G." (See also J.W. 11.)<br />

3. "Alexander Scrymgeour (10th) was boni <strong>in</strong> Duke Street, Ediur, on <strong>the</strong> 3ra day<br />

<strong>of</strong> January 1807. liCLristcr'd <strong>in</strong> S' Andrew's parish, Miu'', Gth .March 1807. Died<br />

at Ed<strong>in</strong>'' on <strong>the</strong> 7th February 1820." He died <strong>in</strong> Abcrcro<strong>in</strong>ljy Place <strong>of</strong> fever.<br />

4. "Frederick Louis Scrymgeour (11th) was born <strong>in</strong> Duke Street, Ivliu' on <strong>the</strong><br />

4th day <strong>of</strong> March 1808. Ueeister'd <strong>in</strong> S' Andrew's Church pari.sh, Kd<strong>in</strong>', 6th<br />

August 1811." He succeeded his fa<strong>the</strong>r as only surviv<strong>in</strong>g son, and <strong>ca</strong>rried on <strong>the</strong><br />

l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family. See post, p. 182.<br />

while <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> daughters,<br />

1. " Margaret Louisa Scrymgeour (1st) was bom at Ed<strong>in</strong>' 21 Jan' 1794." She<br />

is named <strong>in</strong> her uncle Alexander's bond <strong>of</strong> provision lSO-3 (U.D. 45S). She married<br />

at BirkluU, 27 July 1842 (Gent. Mag. xviii., 420), Alt.ra,fl,r Smith, W.S. <strong>in</strong><br />

Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh (son <strong>of</strong> Thomas Smith, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciji.d clerks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mils). By<br />

him. who died 3 Aug. 18G8, tet, 82,- she had no issue. She resided, after liis death,<br />

at 18, York Place, Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh, where she died, 10 -Ian. 1870. Ihiricd <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

2. "Cathar<strong>in</strong>e Scrymgeour (2nd) was born at Ed<strong>in</strong>' 22'' Jan" 1794." be<strong>in</strong>g thus ,<br />

tw<strong>in</strong> with her sister Margaret.^ Also named <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> said bond nf provision (u< sup.).<br />

She married, 4 Dec. 1814 (S.W. 702), Capta<strong>in</strong> liohert Cathrart. II.N'., <strong>of</strong> Carbitston<br />

and Pit<strong>ca</strong>iriie, co. Fife, but by him, who died Nov. 1833 (J.W. 1'.'), had no issue.<br />

She died at Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh, 12 April I^SO, and was buried at Pit<strong>ca</strong>iriie.<br />

3. "Elizabeth <strong>Wedderburn</strong> Scrymgeour (3d) was bom at VA'm' I'J"' VAi' 1795<br />

Reo-ister'd S. Andrew's Church, Ed<strong>in</strong>^" She also is named <strong>in</strong> th.- bond <strong>of</strong> provision<br />

{utsup). She died unmarried at Ma<strong>ca</strong>o <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a 23 An-. lf').<br />

5 "Mary Turner Scrymgeour (5th) was born at lUuionue, I'lfcshiro, Gtli March<br />

1798 Ke"ister'd at Kettle Church, Fifeshire." She aga<strong>in</strong> is namc.l <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> at-ovc<br />

bond {nt sup). She married Thomas Smith. Physician General ni <strong>the</strong> Ijist Inaia<br />

Company's service, but by him, who predeceased l.er, had no is-sue. All-r his death<br />

she lived at West Grange, Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh, where slie died 2.J Mareh_l>.^/ {l<strong>in</strong>»,,<br />

')8-29 March 1887). She was buried at Ed<strong>in</strong>bur-h. Coi.fmnaliou ..l her wdl wan<br />
