Alexander Rait, lieii' served and retoured to his fa<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>in</strong> favonr <strong>of</strong> Peter <strong>Wedderburn</strong>.<br />

2. Janet <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, baptized <strong>in</strong> Dundee 17 Jnly 1663 (D B. 12), and certa<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

dead before 27 July 1681, when, as we have seen, her sister is <strong>ca</strong>lled <strong>the</strong> only<br />

surviv<strong>in</strong>g daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir ])arents (S.W. 4.53). It is probablv she who is named<br />

as " K<strong>in</strong>gennie's daui^htcr," buried <strong>in</strong> Dundee. 1679-80 (D.M I). 9), though this<br />

entry may refer to one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> elder daughters <strong>of</strong> her bro<strong>the</strong>r Ale.xander, who was,<br />

<strong>in</strong>asecse, "<strong>of</strong> Kiugennie " at this date."<br />

<strong>Wedderburn</strong>, " ualurall sono " to K<strong>in</strong>gennie, witnesses <strong>the</strong> marriage contract <strong>of</strong><br />

Marjory <strong>Wedderburn</strong> and James Thomsone (S.W. 307 ; ante, p. 146)' ; 1 Nov. 1655,<br />

when, aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>ca</strong>lled "natural son," he is apprenticed for seven years to <strong>the</strong> deacon<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> baxtars (D.T.G. 4 e), and, 15 July 1658, as "son to K<strong>in</strong>gennie," when<br />

he is a witness to <strong>the</strong> protest aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> removal <strong>of</strong> turf from tlie moor <strong>of</strong><br />

K<strong>in</strong>gennie (S.W. 3"J3). At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> his apprenticeship he was exam<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong><br />

craft, and be<strong>in</strong>g declared a sufficient craftsman was admitted a free master <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

gild 28 Oct I6G2 (D.T.G. 4i. After this, he is generally <strong>ca</strong>lled " baxter," e.y<br />

2 Nov. 1661-62, when <strong>the</strong>re is a decree for him (D.B.R. 473), and aga<strong>in</strong> 14 Aug.<br />

1663 when he is admitted a burgess by his fa<strong>the</strong>r's privilege (D.L.B. 54). and<br />

20 March 1605, when he is a witness (D.P.H. 494). He is named on several<br />

oc<strong>ca</strong>sions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> records <strong>of</strong> his craft up to Nov. 1670 (D.T.G. 4/', note), and<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ues to be designated "baxter," f.f)., 27 Jan. 1666, when he is aga<strong>in</strong> a<br />

witness (D.P.B. 49 6); 11 May 1668, when he is grantee <strong>of</strong> a bond (D D. 16);<br />

12 Nov. 1669, when he takes an apprentice (ib. 17) ; and, I'! Jan. 1671, when he<br />

- - gets a decree (D.B.R. 4f*0), and also dis[)ones to Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, younger<br />

> <strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gennie, a North Ne<strong>the</strong>rgait laud, which he and his wife had .acquired from<br />

Ca<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>e and GrisscU Tyrees, 6 Oct. 1668. He is also named as " maltman " <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> records <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Maltmen <strong>of</strong> Dundee, 27 April 1670, when <strong>the</strong>re is a payment to<br />

him(I).T G. 8). Perhaps he died soon after .Ian. I 671, as <strong>the</strong>re is no later mention<br />

<strong>of</strong> him as liv<strong>in</strong>g, though <strong>the</strong>re is no mention <strong>of</strong> him as dead till 1690 (26 Nov.),<br />

<strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> marriage contract <strong>of</strong> his daughter Margaret (S.W. 491).<br />

He married at Dundee 27 June 1666 (by banns, 16 May preced<strong>in</strong>g) Helena<br />

Rodger (D.M. 10\ and by her h.ad i.ssue two daughters:<br />

1. Margaret "<strong>Wedderburn</strong>,-^ baptized <strong>in</strong> Dundee, 29 April 1667, her fa<strong>the</strong>r's<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r, Easter Powrie, and his son, K<strong>in</strong>gennie, be<strong>in</strong>g witnesses (D.B. 14).<br />

She married at Dundee. 29 Jan. 1691, John Pearson, baxter (D..M. 15), <strong>the</strong><br />

marriage contract (S.W. 491) be<strong>in</strong>g dated. 26 Nov. 1690, and made with<br />

<strong>the</strong> advice and consent <strong>of</strong> Alexander Wedderb\u-n <strong>of</strong> Easter Powrie (her<br />

natural uncle), who provides a small tocher <strong>in</strong> satisf iction <strong>of</strong> any legacy left<br />

to Margaret by his fa<strong>the</strong>r.'' John Pierson died early <strong>in</strong> 1695 (D.Dec. 59),<br />

' Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Dundee registers she had issue, William Rait, bapt 24 Aug. ]6S.t ;<br />
