Sir Joha <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, who was thus <strong>the</strong> second baronet <strong>of</strong> Baliodean, and Introd.<br />

but for atta<strong>in</strong>der eighth <strong>of</strong> Blackness, was born <strong>in</strong> 1789. He<br />

wed°e?burn, Went out to Bombay <strong>in</strong> 1807, where he remaiueJ for thirty<br />

years, hold<strong>in</strong>g various<br />

positions <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g importance <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

civil service, and secur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> high regard <strong>of</strong> botli Kumpeans<br />

and natives. On his return home he resided at Keith House, co. Hadd<strong>in</strong>gton,<br />

and at Meredith, Tibberton, co. Gloucester, a property which his wife hud<br />

<strong>in</strong>herited from a maternal uncle <strong>of</strong> that name. He died at Brighton <strong>in</strong> 18G2,<br />

and was buried at Tibberton.<br />

He had married <strong>in</strong> 1822 Henrietta Louisa Milburn (died 1S81), and by<br />

her had issue, besides a son and daughter who died <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>faucv. two daughters<br />

who died unmarried, and two daughters, Alicia (Lady Hope) and Louisa (ilrs.<br />

Percival). There were also three sons, John, David, and WiUia<strong>in</strong>, <strong>of</strong> whom <strong>the</strong><br />

eldest was killed with his wife and child <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indian mut<strong>in</strong>y<br />

301. Sir William <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, who is married and has two daughters, is now<br />

<strong>in</strong> male l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> senior representative <strong>of</strong> old Robert <strong>Wedderburn</strong> and Janet<br />

Kyd (ante, p. xlvii.), and <strong>the</strong> sole representative <strong>of</strong> his grandfa<strong>the</strong>r, Sir John <strong>of</strong><br />

Bal<strong>in</strong>dean.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> second son, however, <strong>of</strong> old Sir John <strong>Wedderburn</strong> <strong>of</strong> Blackness,<br />

who died <strong>in</strong> 1746, descended three o<strong>the</strong>r branches <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family, all <strong>of</strong> whom,<br />

curiously enough, have assumed o<strong>the</strong>r or additional names. Tho.se are <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Wedderburn</strong>-Colviles <strong>of</strong> Ochiltree, <strong>the</strong> Wedderburu-Ogilvies <strong>of</strong> Ruthven, ami <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Wedderburn</strong>-Max wells <strong>of</strong> Middlebie, descended from Andrew, IVter, ;<strong>in</strong>d James,<br />

<strong>the</strong> three surviv<strong>in</strong>g sons <strong>of</strong> James <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, whom I have already named as<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g with his fa<strong>the</strong>r dur<strong>in</strong>g his imprisonment <strong>in</strong> Southwark (laol <strong>in</strong> 174G.<br />

After Sir John's death he went out to Jamai<strong>ca</strong> and practised<br />

Jamps surcrerv, but returned home <strong>in</strong> 1773, and purchased Jnveresk<br />

or coiviie, Lodge, at Inveresk, co. Alidlotlnan, where he resuled tul his<br />

df/dia^' death <strong>in</strong> 1807. He married Isabella Blackburn or Colvile,<br />

heiress <strong>of</strong> Ochiltree and Craigflower, by whom (died 1821) he<br />

left a daughter, Jean, who married Thomas, tifth Earl <strong>of</strong> Sclknk, and three<br />

sons,<br />

1. Andrew <strong>Wedderburn</strong> or Colvile, long chief partner <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> We.st Indian<br />

house <strong>ca</strong>rried on by various members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family. He was<br />

council <strong>in</strong> England, who died without any surviv<strong>in</strong>g is.sue <strong>in</strong><br />

1880 ; <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Mr. Eden Colvile, <strong>the</strong> last <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family to <strong>ca</strong>rry ou<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> city, who died s.p. <strong>in</strong> 1891, and twelve dnuyhters, <strong>of</strong><br />

whom only three—Isabella (Mrs. Mar<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>), Georgiana Mary (Lady i;lachford),_<br />

and Margaret Agues (Mrs. Kegan Paul)— married. It is to one <strong>of</strong> tiie sous <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> first <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se, Sir Francis Mar<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>, K.C.M.G., that <strong>the</strong> estate <strong>of</strong> Craigtlower<br />

now belongs. He has not, however, been required to change his patronymic.<br />

2. Peter <strong>Wedderburn</strong> or Ogilvy was born <strong>in</strong> 1781, and was for some ycirs<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sea service <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> East India Company. lie ^di.tl <strong>in</strong><br />

sons, one <strong>of</strong> whom. Colonel Thomas Weddcrburu-O-ilvy ij-mi<br />

1814), late <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second Life-guards, is heir-presumptive to <strong>the</strong> h.irniKtcy <strong>of</strong><br />

Bal<strong>in</strong>dean, but has no issue, while <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, John Andrew W e..dcrburn-<br />

Ogilvy (born 1818), has a family <strong>of</strong> several sons and daughters, luclud<strong>in</strong>g an<br />

eldest son, Charles James, bom <strong>in</strong> 1862.
