The suit was still alive <strong>in</strong> lful-73 (S.W. 421; R.A.D. 84, 87 i, 89) and 1674-76<br />

(S.W. 427rt; R.A.D. 9 "J a 6, 94a/>C(//), but I f<strong>in</strong>d no document relat<strong>in</strong>g to it later<br />

than 1G76.1<br />

In his fa<strong>the</strong>r's family we f<strong>in</strong>d him present on nimierous oc<strong>ca</strong>sions <strong>of</strong> family <strong>in</strong>terest,-<br />

and evidently regarded as a trustworthy adviser. Thus <strong>in</strong> 1638 he is one <strong>of</strong> those by<br />

whose advice <strong>the</strong> moneys settled on <strong>the</strong> marriage <strong>of</strong> Sir Ale.xander A\'edderburn <strong>of</strong><br />

lilackne.ss are to be <strong>in</strong>vested (Bl. 14) ; and, 2') Oct. 1647, he is named as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

mo<strong>the</strong>r's k<strong>in</strong> to Uavid and Andrew I'.rnce (l).B.K. 449, and ante, p. 4S). It is with him<br />

as " <strong>the</strong> primm <strong>of</strong> our neam " that Dr. John <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, <strong>in</strong> Moravia, corresponded <strong>in</strong><br />

1647 (Bl 1'. 42), as did his son <strong>in</strong> 165l-o2 (S.W. 303-5).-' He was a legatee under<br />

<strong>the</strong> will confirmed <strong>in</strong> 1 6 tS <strong>of</strong> his great-iuicle James, <strong>the</strong> merchant, who left him<br />

" my emerode or o<strong>the</strong>rwise, as he shall th<strong>in</strong>k best, my great purse-pennic <strong>of</strong> gold<br />

(Br.T. 13). He was a curator to his cous<strong>in</strong>, James Boyter <strong>of</strong> I'iimor i^ante, p. 140),<br />

21 Dec. 1651 (D.B.ll. 4.t4); one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> executors to Alexander, <strong>the</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>er (ante,<br />

p. 112) <strong>in</strong> 16.i3-54 (i6. 462) ; and is named as mo<strong>the</strong>r's k<strong>in</strong> to Margaret,^ daughter to<br />

ilr. Andrew Bruce 25 June 1655 (ib. 466). In 1660, May 4, he got a bond from<br />

Barten Biisone (ante, p. 114), by which, <strong>in</strong> event <strong>of</strong> Bilsone hav<strong>in</strong>g no children who<br />

reached "perfytt ago," a foreland <strong>in</strong> North Argylegait was to pass to him (S.W. 338),<br />

and, as we have seen, this event occurred.'' He witnessed <strong>the</strong> marriage contract <strong>of</strong><br />

Margaret, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir Alexander, with Patrick Kyd, <strong>in</strong> 1 655 (F.S. 29) ; and, <strong>in</strong> 1 663, was<br />

one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial advisers to that <strong>of</strong> her sister Jean with Patrick Kyd's bro<strong>the</strong>r, William,<br />

(Bl. 16),'' to whose son James he was a curator <strong>in</strong> 1676-80 (D.D. 23 ; D. Dec. 6). So<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>, he witnesses <strong>the</strong> marriage contract <strong>of</strong> Sir Alexander's eldest son, John, <strong>in</strong> 1667<br />

(D.Doc. 36 (/) ; is a curator to Alexander Milne <strong>in</strong> 1670 (.S.W. 400)"; witne.'sscs a sas<strong>in</strong>e<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> marriage contract <strong>of</strong> Agnes <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, Lady Pitcur (daughter to Sir<br />

Peter <strong>of</strong> Gosford), <strong>in</strong> 1674 (G.R.S. 43), and ano<strong>the</strong>r s.as<strong>in</strong>e, follow<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> marriage<br />

contract <strong>of</strong> Cecilia, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir Alexander, with William Baillie <strong>of</strong> Littlegill, <strong>in</strong> Feb.<br />

167(! (G.R.S. 44).<br />

There are, <strong>of</strong> course, numerous references to him as obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g decrees, as <strong>the</strong> grantor<br />

or grantee <strong>of</strong> bonds, discharges, etc , and as witness to various transactions. Thus, 3 March<br />

1638, he witnesses a baptism at Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh (Ed.B. n 1) ; 10 Mav 1641, gets a decreet <strong>of</strong><br />

poynd<strong>in</strong>g (D.A.C.B. 9)<br />

; 22 Nov. 1647, is grantee <strong>of</strong> a bond (ll.D." 148), and 15 .May 1649,<br />

gets a discharge fS.W. 297). A bond granted by him to Walter Graham <strong>of</strong> Duntroon,<br />

who assigned it, 20 Maj- 1677 (S.W. 431), is also <strong>of</strong>ten named <strong>in</strong> connection with discharges<br />

to Krister Powrie for its annual rent l()79-8l (S.W. 440, 445, 454). O<strong>the</strong>r slight<br />

Matilda JIargavet, and aga<strong>in</strong> Matilda (Bl. 10; D.B. 20, 22, 23, 25, 27, 31); and <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

children <strong>of</strong> James, <strong>the</strong> clerk, viz., Robert, James, and Matilda (D.B. 24, 2S. 32). His name also<br />

occurs on numerous oc<strong>ca</strong>sions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dundee register as witness and godfa<strong>the</strong>r at <strong>the</strong> baptisms <strong>of</strong><br />

children not <strong>of</strong> his name. It occurs <strong>in</strong> all some seventy-seven times, 1645-82, <strong>the</strong> last oc<strong>ca</strong>.siou be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

dated 9 Dec. 16(52.<br />
