INTRODUCTION.<br />

Wedderluirn, who was thus heir to both her fa<strong>the</strong>r and her imi-Ie Walter- Introd,<br />

She married <strong>in</strong> lGO-t-5 James Kynnaird, and went with him to Els<strong>in</strong>oie <strong>in</strong><br />

Denmark, where <strong>the</strong>y were liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1616, and where <strong>the</strong>y may have permanently<br />

settled. The last reference to her is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> will <strong>of</strong> her motiier <strong>in</strong><br />

1620, <strong>in</strong> which hoth she and a daii^'hter <strong>of</strong> hers are named as legatees.<br />

The male l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> old David <strong>Wedderburn</strong> <strong>in</strong> .Miirraygait is thus shown to<br />

have failed. It is clear that <strong>of</strong> his two sons onlv David had issue, and <strong>of</strong><br />

his two sons aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> male l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> William is !^hown to be ext<strong>in</strong>ct liy <strong>the</strong><br />

references to sons <strong>of</strong> his daughter as <strong>the</strong>ir grandfa<strong>the</strong>r's heirs, while that <strong>of</strong><br />

James is quite clearly disposed <strong>of</strong> by <strong>the</strong> retour <strong>of</strong> his grand-daughter Elizabeth<br />

as heir to botli her fa<strong>the</strong>r and his only bro<strong>the</strong>.-.<br />

I have thus dealt with <strong>the</strong> descendants <strong>of</strong> three <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> four orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

ancestors, mentioned above (pp. xxviii.-ix.). In <strong>the</strong> accounts<br />

d^n'S.''^''^'^ which I have given <strong>of</strong> old James <strong>Wedderburn</strong> or "<strong>of</strong> <strong>Wedderburn</strong>,"<br />

<strong>the</strong> husband <strong>of</strong> Janet Barry, and <strong>of</strong> Walter <strong>Wedderburn</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Welgait <strong>of</strong> Dundee, I have <strong>in</strong>di<strong>ca</strong>ted <strong>the</strong> possibility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> e.xistence <strong>of</strong><br />

descendants who are no longer traceable. Thus, John, <strong>the</strong> second <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Gude and GodLie Ballatis triumvirate, may have had descendants <strong>in</strong><br />

England ; Gilbert, <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> James <strong>Wedderburn</strong> and Janet Forrester, may<br />

also have married and had children ; <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> a bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> his,<br />

Henry, I have not disposed; and <strong>the</strong>re is actual ground for believ<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

<strong>the</strong> " protomedicus <strong>in</strong> Moravia " may be still represented by a family naturalized<br />

<strong>the</strong>re. To <strong>the</strong>se must be added Robert and Francis <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, named at<br />

p. xxxiii. n, as well as several persons <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> name, obviously members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Dundee family, whom I t<strong>in</strong>d mentioned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> records but <strong>in</strong> regard to whom<br />

I have been unable to ascerta<strong>in</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>ir parentage or whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y married<br />

and had issue. Of <strong>the</strong>se a list will be fuund <strong>in</strong> chapter v. <strong>of</strong> Part i. They<br />

are, chiefly, Archibald and JIat<strong>the</strong>w <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, both liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Dundee <strong>in</strong><br />

1560, and <strong>in</strong> regard to whom I have made a suggestion at p. 491, ;<strong>in</strong>d<br />

.Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, Vi<strong>ca</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Sandridge 1630-43, who may be a descendant<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ballatis.<br />

TV. I BOW come to <strong>the</strong> progenitor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family with whose<br />

<strong>history</strong> this <strong>book</strong> is ma<strong>in</strong>ly concerned, that, namely, from<br />

Robert which are sprung <strong>the</strong> families designed <strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gennie, Easter<br />

1460-1518.<br />

'<br />

Powrie, and <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, Blackness, Bal<strong>in</strong>dean. and Gosford,<br />

with <strong>the</strong>ir various younger branches. Robert <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, <strong>the</strong><br />

ancestor <strong>of</strong> this l<strong>in</strong>e, was bom about 14G0. I have not been able to learn<br />

much about him. He lived <strong>in</strong> Dundee on <strong>the</strong> north side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ilarketgait<br />

;<br />

was a burgess and bailie ; and is named as witness<strong>in</strong>g several documents<br />

141)2— 1513. He died possibly before 1518, and certa<strong>in</strong>ly before Sept. 1520,<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g married about 1485 Janet Froster, daughter <strong>of</strong> David Froster <strong>in</strong><br />

Methven, and by her, who survived him and was liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1530-31, when she<br />

made a settlement <strong>of</strong> some North Murraygait land on her son Jame.-;, had<br />

issue five sons and a daughter, viz., James, Robert, David, Alexander, George,<br />

and Elizabeth. Of <strong>the</strong>se <strong>the</strong> last named was thrice married, («) to Alexander<br />

Lovell ; (6) to Alexander Ogilvy, provost <strong>of</strong> Dundee ;<br />

and (c) to Patrick Lyoun,<br />

with whom she is <strong>of</strong>ten named, e..7., as gett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1547 a gift under <strong>the</strong> Privy<br />

Seal to her and Lyoun <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> right to have all <strong>the</strong>ir goods imported <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

burgh free <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> customs.<br />

Of her bro<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>the</strong> eldest, James, is constantly mentioned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> records,<br />

though it is by no means easy to dist<strong>in</strong>guish on every oc<strong>ca</strong>sion<br />

Hiseon, Jamea whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> reference is to him or to one <strong>of</strong> his contemporary<br />

1490-1541.' namesakes. It is he, I th<strong>in</strong>k (and not James' son, Jame.s), who<br />

•was admitted burgess <strong>of</strong> Dundee <strong>in</strong> 1514, and to whom we
