223), and aga<strong>in</strong>, 20 .liuie, <strong>in</strong> a bond <strong>of</strong> which lie is grantee (U.K. 97) lie is named<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1027 as a witness, 28 May, to <strong>the</strong> will <strong>of</strong> his bro<strong>the</strong>r James (Lir.T. 10), and 13 Oct.,<br />

when he and his bro<strong>the</strong>r Peter granted a charter <strong>of</strong> si.\ acres <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Westlield <strong>of</strong><br />

Dundee to Sir W. (Jrahani <strong>of</strong> Claverhou.se (P.I5.X. 19), so that he was still <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

North <strong>in</strong> that year, and he must have cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>the</strong>re 1029-3 1, as we f<strong>in</strong>d him<br />

named as a regent <strong>of</strong> S. Leonard's 26 June lti29 ((i.S.U. 102), 2S .Vjiril, 31 .May,<br />

1630, when he is grantee <strong>of</strong> two bonds (R D. 11.'), 125), and 13 Aug. <strong>in</strong> that year,<br />

when his bro<strong>the</strong>r William's widow, Jeane Piersoun, .assigns to him a life-ren't, to<br />

which she was entitled under her marriage contract ((;.U..S. 7). We have already<br />

seen that he was William's heir, be<strong>in</strong>g so entered 1031, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> South .Markot'.'ait land,<br />

<strong>of</strong> which he granted a charter to his bro<strong>the</strong>r K<strong>in</strong>gennie (S.W. 219-50; I'.li.N. 23, 25).<br />

He is said to have travelled abroad for some years, and this is very iirobalily true.<br />

There is a factory granted by him to one <strong>of</strong> his family 7 .lune lO.'il, which was<br />

probably made on his leav<strong>in</strong>g home (R.D. 100a). This "tact'iry is reeonled iu <strong>the</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong>ute-<strong>book</strong>, but not iu <strong>the</strong> record, so that its terms do not ajviM'ar. It would seem,<br />

however, to have been granted to his nephew <strong>the</strong> clerk and 'riiom.is Wichtan, as,<br />

soon after he returns home, ho grants, 17 April 1638, a discharge to thcni "<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>in</strong>tromissions with his aft'airs dur<strong>in</strong>g his absence fnim Scotland (/A. 12S). Ho was<br />

thus home by <strong>the</strong> early part <strong>of</strong> 1038, aud may have been back earlier, .as <strong>the</strong>re is au<br />

action by him "once regent <strong>of</strong> S. Leonard's" aLraiust Haliburton <strong>of</strong> I'itcur, upon<br />

a bond <strong>of</strong> 31 May 1630 (R.D. U.i, ll9),i aud \\2 is also grantee <strong>of</strong> a bond made<br />

at Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh <strong>in</strong> Feb. 1637 {ih. 124). He is one <strong>of</strong> those who are to advise as to<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> moneys settled by <strong>the</strong> m.arriage contract, 5 Jan. 10;tS, <strong>of</strong> his<br />

nephew, Alexander (Bl. 14), to <strong>the</strong> baptism <strong>of</strong> whose sou John, at Dundee, he is<br />

wituesa, 12 Feb. 1041 (Bl. 9).-'<br />

After this <strong>the</strong>re is no reference to his presence <strong>in</strong> Dundee, or, <strong>in</strong>deed, <strong>in</strong><br />

Scotland for many years, and he, no doubt, was aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> F.ngland aud aljroad.<br />

In 1646 (April 9) he was admitted an honorary member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I'niversity <strong>of</strong><br />

O.\ford, <strong>in</strong> connection with which event <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>'_' account <strong>of</strong> him is given <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Fuxii Ojronienses <strong>of</strong> Anthony Wood (vol. ii, 92. ed. I'.liss, )81.'))^ :<br />
