Part 11. divisions, while on <strong>the</strong> centre mould<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>in</strong>cised <strong>the</strong> name Dun<strong>ca</strong>ne, with <strong>the</strong><br />

Chap. II.<br />

<strong>in</strong>itials C(hirurgcou) '\V(illi;Lm) Dun<strong>ca</strong>n, <strong>the</strong> arms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dun<strong>ca</strong>ns <strong>of</strong> Lundie,<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> name " Weddcrburiie " <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itials C(athcriue) W(edderbum),<br />

<strong>the</strong> arms <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wedderburn</strong> <strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gennic, and <strong>the</strong> date 1600. The letters S.J.S. also<br />

appear on <strong>the</strong> <strong>ca</strong>sket, and probably refers to Sir James Scrymgeour<strong>of</strong> Dudhope, who<br />

•was provost <strong>of</strong> Dundee 1593— 1G09.'<br />

CATHAKIXE WEDDERBURN'S CASKET.<br />

'<br />

The curio was unear<strong>the</strong>d by Mr. G. B. Simpson, a collector, <strong>of</strong> Dundee, <strong>in</strong> 1888, and was exhibited to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Society <strong>of</strong> .Scottish Antiiiuaries <strong>in</strong> M.arch <strong>of</strong> that year, when a description <strong>of</strong> it was read by<br />

Mr. A. H. ^Millar, F.S A. Scot. An account <strong>of</strong> it, with tlie above illustration, was pr<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Dundee Advertiser <strong>of</strong> 1-7 JIarch 1 883, <strong>in</strong> which Ka<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>e <strong>Wedderburn</strong> was wrongly described as a sisU-r<br />

<strong>of</strong> Sir Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong> <strong>of</strong> Blackness. The orig<strong>in</strong>al use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> box seems to have puzzled <strong>the</strong><br />

antiquarians. Some suggest that it was a <strong>ca</strong>sh box, o<strong>the</strong>rs a " pomanda box," and o<strong>the</strong>rs that it wa.^<br />

part <strong>of</strong> a sun-di;xl. It is now <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> possession <strong>of</strong> Mrs. Anstru<strong>the</strong>r (Miss Jlorison Dun<strong>ca</strong>n) <strong>of</strong><br />

Uftughton, CO. Fife.
