2. David <strong>Wedderburn</strong>i [1.563'— 1G331], second son <strong>of</strong> Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong> and<br />

Janet Myln, and known <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> family as David <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ilS. or Compt Bulk, was<br />

probably born about 1563, his elder bro<strong>the</strong>r, Alexander, hav<strong>in</strong>g been born <strong>in</strong> 1561,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ir sister Martraret <strong>in</strong> 15G2. He was tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>ider his fa<strong>the</strong>r, and is firet<br />

named, IS May 1570, as "servitor to <strong>the</strong> clerk" on an oc<strong>ca</strong>sion when he acts as<br />

witness (D. 1'.15. 176 /;).- It may be thus, or be<strong>ca</strong>use, as we shall see, <strong>the</strong> volumes<br />

were long <strong>in</strong> his jxissession, that we f<strong>in</strong>d his name written on <strong>the</strong> title pages <strong>of</strong> some<br />

<strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r's <strong>book</strong>s, e.q., on that <strong>of</strong> vol. 2-'i8 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dundee Protocol Books and on<br />

those <strong>of</strong> vols vi. and xiv. <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I'.iu'gh and Head Com-t Uecords, as well as on that<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first <strong>of</strong> his bro<strong>the</strong>r's Protocol <strong>book</strong>s, begun no doubt under <strong>the</strong>ir fa<strong>the</strong>r's eye.''<br />

The next reference to him is dated 2 June l.')71, when his parents get a charter <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own and his favour <strong>of</strong> an annual rent out <strong>of</strong> iMonorgund's er<strong>of</strong>t (D.P.I!. 80),<br />

after which <strong>the</strong>re is no mention <strong>of</strong> him till 15 .May 1582, when he was admitted a<br />

burgess <strong>of</strong> Diuidee (D.W. 12//; D.L.B. 27). There is a curious barga<strong>in</strong> recorded<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> next year, 5 June I'lS^, bj- which he and his sister Margaret agree that she<br />

will give him a cloak <strong>of</strong> Frcnsche Flem<strong>in</strong>g on her wedd<strong>in</strong>g day, while he, if she is<br />

still " noclit raareit or paie '' with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vear, is to give her "twa crownes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

6one"(D.P.B 229).<br />

He was long a merchant and active citizen <strong>in</strong> Dundee, and <strong>the</strong> records <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

burgh conta<strong>in</strong> numerous references to him as witness,^attorney,<strong>ca</strong>utioner, procurator,<br />
