BO m that <strong>of</strong> U alter, we are unable to tix his jjarcutage. He was no doubt relate.l, perhaps as<br />
bro<strong>the</strong>r, or if not so, certa<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong> some near degree <strong>of</strong> cous<strong>in</strong>ship, to .James and his contemporaries,<br />
but this wo <strong>ca</strong>nnot dettne. His son David <strong>ca</strong>nnot have been born later than 1 500 so<br />
that we may Uike it that he himself was born not later than 1475, and if <strong>the</strong> William Wedd'er<br />
bum who took his degree at .S. Andrew's <strong>in</strong> 1477 (S.A.K. I), and was probably born <strong>the</strong>refore<br />
about 14G0, could be identified with <strong>the</strong> sou <strong>of</strong> Walter (see below), we should have to place<br />
<strong>the</strong> birth <strong>of</strong> Walter as early as 1410. He is first named on 16 Oct. I.'i23 when David<br />
<strong>Wedderburn</strong>, "sou <strong>of</strong> Walter," is admitted a burgess <strong>of</strong> Dundee (DLB 5) i and a-i<strong>in</strong><br />
mOct.-Xov. 1524, (D.P.i!. S, ]u) and 1531-.32 {U,. 36. 46) after which ho is not named<br />
till many years later, when, 1558-59, his son David is <strong>ca</strong>lled " son and heir <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late<br />
Walter " [d, 85 „, 89 a, 93. 97). He may well, however, have been dead some time before<br />
15^3, but <strong>of</strong> this ttiore is no pro<strong>of</strong>. Nor has it been certa<strong>in</strong>ly ascerta<strong>in</strong>ed when or whom<br />
he married, although tlie name <strong>of</strong> liis wife is believed to have been Janet Nicholson-<br />
(D.B.R. 19 a), and he certa<strong>in</strong>ly was <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> two or three sons (<strong>of</strong> whom only one<br />
had issue), and was thus <strong>the</strong> progonitor <strong>of</strong> a branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family for manv vears resident<br />
iu Fife. The priority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se sons is not known, but <strong>the</strong>y were' as follows :—<br />
