This Ale.fander, admitted a burgess <strong>in</strong> 1527, is generally termed<br />

"elder" <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> records, <strong>in</strong> order to dist<strong>in</strong>guish him from his<br />

contemporaries—Alexander, <strong>the</strong> old clerk,<br />

elder, d. 1587." Pittormie. He was a prosperous merchant <strong>in</strong> Dundee, wiiere<br />

he owned several properties <strong>in</strong> South Marketg:iit, South (Jowgait,<br />

and <strong>in</strong> Skirl<strong>in</strong>g's Wynd. He lived to a considerable age, as he <strong>ca</strong>nnot<br />

have been born much after 1505, and died between <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> 15S3 and<br />

early <strong>in</strong> 1587. He had married <strong>in</strong> about 1537 Isobell Anderson, and by her,<br />

who survived him and was liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1591, had issue, <strong>in</strong> addition to three'<br />

daughters,' two sons, Richard, who settled <strong>in</strong> Denmark, and Patrick, who<br />

remarried <strong>in</strong> Dundee.<br />

Richard Wedderbiirn, whom J.W. <strong>in</strong> his MS. memoir wrongly placed as a<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gennie's fa<strong>the</strong>r, is, like his cous<strong>in</strong> Edward, <strong>the</strong><br />
