THE SCRYMGKOURS OF DUDHOPK 187<br />

I. SCRYMGEOUliS OF DUDOP.<br />

(Repr<strong>in</strong>ted from A SijsUm <strong>of</strong> Ueraldry, by Alexander N'isbet, vol.ii., App.,p. 49, Ed<strong>in</strong>., 1742).<br />

In <strong>the</strong> first volume <strong>of</strong> tliU SiisUm, pape 294,' I gave a short account <strong>of</strong> tlie rise <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Part U.<br />

Scrimgeour, and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family with <strong>the</strong>ir armor<strong>in</strong>l bear<strong>in</strong>ijs, but I, not be<strong>in</strong>g well <strong>in</strong>formed, said that <strong>the</strong> Utiap. V.<br />

familv was now ext<strong>in</strong>ct; nheieas, by better <strong>in</strong>formation, <strong>the</strong> heir male <strong>of</strong> tailzie, as also <strong>of</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e, viz., App.<br />

Dr Alexander Scrymi/eour, Pr<strong>of</strong>-saor <strong>of</strong> Div<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>in</strong> tlie Uuiver«ity <strong>of</strong> S. Aiidr.-w's, with sevenil otliern <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

family, are extant, and have <strong>the</strong>ir arms uiiitricuUte iu <strong>the</strong> Lyon HejisUr, which I have given <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> above<br />

cited place.<br />

As to <strong>the</strong> rise <strong>of</strong> this ancient and honourable name (which <strong>the</strong> Encbsh spell .^erimzenur, and some<br />

families <strong>in</strong> Scotland Scrimieuvr) our hi.-torians agree, that it was upon oc<strong>ca</strong>sion <strong>of</strong> a Bi;,-nal service done <strong>the</strong><br />

K<strong>in</strong>g by Sir Alexander Carron, whose name was <strong>the</strong>refore changed <strong>in</strong>to ScryiuKuoiir, I'.f.. a hlmrp fn;htiir,<br />

and is <strong>the</strong> first knight we read <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong> our <strong>history</strong>, lluchanan places it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> reicn <strong>of</strong> .M:ilc
