herself designed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> entry grandmo<strong>the</strong>r to <strong>the</strong> child (D.H s.d , orig.<br />

Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong>' [1640-92], fourth <strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gennio, ami second <strong>of</strong> Fjister<br />

Powrie, eldest son <strong>of</strong> Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong> and Elizabeth llamsav, was born about<br />

1640, and is first named 5 April and 21 Nov. 1643 <strong>in</strong> connection withtiie will and estate<br />

<strong>of</strong> his mo<strong>the</strong>r's fa<strong>the</strong>r, -lohn Rawsay (S.W. 286, 288), and next, 16 Oct. 1G18, when he is<br />

entered heir to his bro<strong>the</strong>r John <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> North Marketgait land <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir late mo<strong>the</strong>r (I) P.B.<br />

274).'^ He matriculated at S. Andrew's <strong>in</strong> 1655, but <strong>the</strong>re is no record <strong>of</strong> his gnulnat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>re (S.A.ll. 28). After this <strong>the</strong> earliest references to him arc 15 .Inly \>'>''H, when he,<br />

as procurator for his fa<strong>the</strong>r, requires Durham <strong>of</strong> Omachie to desist from tak<strong>in</strong>g: i)eat from<br />

tlie moor <strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gennie (S.W. 323 itt sup); 29 June 1660, 8 .(une lGij2, when he is a<br />

witness (S.W. 344; D.D. 10); 2N April 1663, when he witnesses his fatiiers acipiisition<br />

<strong>of</strong> Eiister Powrie (S.W. 358-59); and, 7 May 16G3, when he is attorney for his stei>mo<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

Margaret Milne, <strong>in</strong> regard to <strong>the</strong> charge on Wester (lourdie <strong>in</strong> her f/ivnur (F..S. 37).<br />

On <strong>the</strong>se oc<strong>ca</strong>sions he is <strong>ca</strong>lled "younger <strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gennie." "eldest," or "elder sou and<br />

apparent heir " <strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

He, "younger <strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gennie," was admitted burgess <strong>of</strong> Dundee by his fa<strong>the</strong>r's<br />

privilege, 15 May 1665 (D L B. 55), at <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> which year he married (see below),<br />

when his fa<strong>the</strong>r, 1 Jan. 1666, settled on him <strong>the</strong> lands <strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gcimie,-' and, subject<br />

to his own liferent, those <strong>of</strong> Easter Powrie also (F.S. 48. 49). After this he is <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>ca</strong>lle
