June 1627— Ajiril 16;53, is Alexander, second <strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gennie, e.q., ''> Jul}- 1G"27, 21 March,<br />

28 July 1628 (S.W. 229, 230-31 ; D.C. ,'i7 ; D.D. 2),- and 30 June 1629, 26 July 1632<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> admissions <strong>of</strong> his sons as burgesses (D.L.B. 45, 48). No protocol <strong>book</strong> <strong>of</strong> liis<br />

ia now extant, but one such volume, at any rate, is referred to <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> records, when a<br />

sas<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> 2f> April 1632 <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> protocol <strong>book</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Jlr. Alexander Weddcrbuni <strong>of</strong><br />

K<strong>in</strong>gennie, clerk <strong>of</strong> Dundee, "a loyal and faithful notary " is tran-sunied, 15 April 1040 (S.W.<br />

279 ; D.B R. 441 a). On ceas<strong>in</strong>g to be clerk, he was elected. If! .luue 1633, comiui.ssioucr<br />

to parliament for Dundee (A.P.S. 15/' : and later <strong>in</strong> that year, I Oct., was elected councillor<br />

(D.C.B. 55), and is <strong>of</strong>ten named as such and as collector <strong>of</strong> taxations 16.34-37 {ib. 56).<br />

He is now constantly <strong>ca</strong>lled " elder " to dist<strong>in</strong>guish him from his nephew, e.r]., <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> last two<br />

references (D.C B. n5, 56) and <strong>in</strong> 1636 Jan 9, June 28, July 4, when ho is aga<strong>in</strong> named<br />

as clerk <strong>of</strong> Dundee, and as hold<strong>in</strong>g courts as clerk (D.A.C.B. 3), probably <strong>in</strong> his nephew's<br />

absence. He was also clerk and kee[)er <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Forfar Register <strong>of</strong> Sas<strong>in</strong>es for some<br />

years, and is so named 15 July 1624 (S.W. 214); 6 Feb. 1627 (G S.R. 100); 12 .luno<br />

1629 (F.S. 13) ; 14 Oct. 1633" (D.C. 63; ; 1 Aug. 1637, just before his death (F.S. 34) ;<br />

and 13 Sept. 1637, when <strong>the</strong> post is dechired va<strong>ca</strong>nt by his decease {ih. 4).<br />

He was his fa<strong>the</strong>r's heir and executor, and, as such, paid over to his sister<br />

Elizabeth a sum due to her, and got a discharge from her and her husband, Dr. Bruce,<br />

23 May 1623 (S.W. 223), as he did also, 11 Xov. 1G26, from <strong>the</strong> Rev. John Dun<strong>ca</strong>nsone <strong>of</strong><br />

Dundee, for payment <strong>of</strong> a legacy <strong>of</strong> 100 merks left to <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ister by old K<strong>in</strong>gennie (//*. 225),<br />

and, 25 Nov. <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same year, from his sister ilagdalen and her second husband for payment<br />

<strong>of</strong> her tocher (^V,. 226).^ It is as his fa<strong>the</strong>r's heir and successor that his uncle David<br />

makes a memorandum to " persew " him " for <strong>the</strong> soumes and <strong>ca</strong>ussis specefeit <strong>in</strong> my<br />

clame " (D.W. 19 a).-' His executorship cont<strong>in</strong>ues to be mentioned <strong>in</strong> 1627, <strong>in</strong> which year,<br />

9 July, he pays over <strong>the</strong> 500 merks left by his fa<strong>the</strong>r to <strong>the</strong> poor <strong>of</strong> Dundee (D.C. 55)<br />

and, 8 Nov., gets a discharge for 200 merks from his bro<strong>the</strong>r William (S.W. 232). In <strong>the</strong><br />

next year, 13 Xov. 1628, he pays over to his bro<strong>the</strong>r Peter two sums <strong>of</strong> £1,050 and<br />

£1,000 which had been assigned" to Peter by <strong>the</strong>ir fa<strong>the</strong>r {ih. 237).<br />

On <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r he succeeded to K<strong>in</strong>gennie and Wester Gourdie, be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

first designed "<strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gennie, bailie <strong>of</strong> Dundee " <strong>in</strong> a bond by him to his bro<strong>the</strong>r John,<br />

13 May 1626 (R.D. 99', while <strong>the</strong> precept to <strong>in</strong>feft him <strong>in</strong> Wester Gourdie is dated ten<br />

days later, 23 May (S.W. 222),'^ though sas<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong>reon did not follow for a year, 18 May<br />

1627 {il). 227;G.R.S. 2)." I do f<strong>in</strong>d his retour <strong>in</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gemiie, but he contracted to .set<br />

it <strong>in</strong> tack for five years at 88 bolls victual a year, 21 Dec. 1626 {iX.D. 96), ^ and <strong>of</strong><br />

course got sas<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> it, registered <strong>in</strong> June 1630 (G.R.S. 4). There is, 9 April 162S, a<br />

precept to <strong>in</strong>feft him <strong>in</strong> an annual rent (which his fa<strong>the</strong>r had held) out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lands <strong>of</strong><br />

James Ferriar (S.W. 234 ; P.B.N. 20); 30 Sept. 1629, he was <strong>in</strong>feft, as his fa<strong>the</strong>r's heir,<br />

<strong>in</strong> a South Markelgait tenement which he at once alienates to his bro<strong>the</strong>r William<br />

(P.B.N. 22), and, 163 1, he got sas<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r land <strong>in</strong> Dundee (G.R.S. b). He had<br />

some diftereuce with Durhame <strong>of</strong> Umquhy (Omachie) anent <strong>the</strong> marches <strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gennie<br />

and, 6 June 1631, protests aga<strong>in</strong>st a boundary dyke built by Durhame (D.P.B. 487), and<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> next year, 11 Dec. 1632, had litigation re <strong>the</strong> muir <strong>of</strong> Downy, when <strong>the</strong> Earl <strong>of</strong><br />
