THE WEDDERBURN BOOK.<br />
There was a Sir David Home <strong>of</strong> Wedderburu <strong>in</strong> 1450. He had a son named<br />
David, who died before Iiis fa<strong>the</strong>r, leav<strong>in</strong>g two sons, <strong>of</strong> whom Georije, <strong>the</strong> elder<br />
succeeded his grandfa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> esuite,' and was killed by <strong>the</strong> English <strong>in</strong> UOt'<br />
His son. Sir David, fell at FlfKldcn <strong>in</strong> 1513. Sir David had seven sons, who arc<br />
immortalised as " Tlic seven spears <strong>of</strong> Wedderburu " <strong>in</strong> " The Lay <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Last<br />
M<strong>in</strong>strel." The eldest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " seven spears "—George—died with his fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong><br />
" . . . <strong>the</strong> Scottish circle deep<br />
That fought around <strong>the</strong>ir k<strong>in</strong>g."<br />
The second son, David, who <strong>the</strong>n be<strong>ca</strong>me <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family, was sla<strong>in</strong> by <strong>the</strong><br />
English <strong>in</strong> 1524. He left two sons—George and David—<strong>the</strong> former <strong>of</strong> whom fell<br />
at <strong>the</strong> battle <strong>of</strong> P<strong>in</strong>ky <strong>in</strong> 1517. He was succeeded by his younger bro<strong>the</strong>r, David,<br />
who died <strong>in</strong> 1574, leav<strong>in</strong>g one son—Sir George—who lived until 1616. Sir Gcor'e's<br />
eldest son, Sir David, was killed at <strong>the</strong> baUle <strong>of</strong> Dunbar <strong>in</strong> 1650. Sir David's<br />
eldest son, who was sla<strong>in</strong> with his fa<strong>the</strong>r at Dunbar <strong>in</strong> 1650, had one son, George,<br />
who succeeded to <strong>the</strong> property and died before 1715. He had two sons, George',<br />
<strong>the</strong> elder, and Francis, <strong>the</strong> younger. George, who be<strong>ca</strong>me owner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> estate on<br />
<strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r, had sii sons and three daughters. Hav<strong>in</strong>g jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>surgents <strong>in</strong> 1715, he was att^i<strong>in</strong>ted, and his estate forfeited to <strong>the</strong> Crown. Ihe<br />
Commissionei-s <strong>of</strong> Enquiry on <strong>the</strong> Forfeited EsUtes had <strong>the</strong> property surveved and<br />
valued as so forfeited ;<br />
but <strong>in</strong> a question between N<strong>in</strong>ian Home, <strong>of</strong> liillie, a' creditor<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> atta<strong>in</strong>ted laird, and <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong> Court <strong>of</strong> Session decided that <strong>the</strong> property<br />
was excepted from <strong>the</strong> Crown's right.<br />
N<strong>in</strong>ian Home, who now be<strong>ca</strong>me <strong>the</strong> absolute owner <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, generously<br />
re-<strong>in</strong>feft David, <strong>the</strong> eldest son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> atta<strong>in</strong>ted laird, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> estate, and <strong>ca</strong>lled to<br />
<strong>the</strong> succession <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> David's bro<strong>the</strong>rs and sisters (<strong>the</strong> sons and daughters <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> atta<strong>in</strong>ted laird), <strong>the</strong> second son, "Geordie," only excepted.<br />
In 1726 N<strong>in</strong>ian Home married Margaret, <strong>the</strong> eldest daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> atta<strong>in</strong>ted<br />
laird.<br />
<strong>Wedderburn</strong> estate was now successively held by David, <strong>the</strong> eldest son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
atta<strong>in</strong>ted laird, who died <strong>in</strong> 1762, and Patrick, <strong>the</strong> third son, who died <strong>in</strong> 176(!.<br />
None <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> atta<strong>in</strong>ted laird's sons leav<strong>in</strong>g issue, <strong>the</strong> estate passed under <strong>the</strong> entail<br />
to Patrick, <strong>the</strong> eldest surviv<strong>in</strong>g son <strong>of</strong> Mai-garut, <strong>the</strong> eldest daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> atta<strong>in</strong>ted<br />
laird, by N<strong>in</strong>ian Home <strong>of</strong> Billie. Patrick who had succeeded to Billie on <strong>the</strong> death<br />
<strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r, N<strong>in</strong>ian Home, <strong>in</strong> 1744, was returned as nearest lawful heir <strong>of</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e<br />
and tailzie to Patrick Home <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, his mo<strong>the</strong>r's bro<strong>the</strong>r. lie died<br />
unmarried <strong>in</strong> 1808. His bro<strong>the</strong>r David, <strong>the</strong> next heir <strong>of</strong> entail, succeeded to <strong>the</strong><br />
property, and died at Wedderlmrn <strong>in</strong> 1S09. David's sister, ,Mits Jean Home, be<strong>ca</strong>me<br />
<strong>the</strong> next owner, and died at Paxton <strong>in</strong> 1S12. The property <strong>the</strong>n passed under <strong>the</strong><br />
entail to George, <strong>the</strong> second son <strong>of</strong> Isobel, second daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> atta<strong>in</strong>ted laird<br />
by her husband Alexander Home <strong>of</strong> Jard<strong>in</strong>efield. George d}<strong>in</strong>g without issue, <strong>the</strong><br />
estate fell, under entail, to James, <strong>the</strong> third sou <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rev.' John Tod, m<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>of</strong><br />
Lixdykirk, by his wife, Jean, <strong>the</strong> third daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> atta<strong>in</strong>ted laird. James Tod<br />
Home died unmarried <strong>in</strong> 1820. The only daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rev. John Tod, by his<br />
wife Jean, third daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> atta<strong>in</strong>ted laird, had married a Mr. John Forman,<br />
and her eldest son by Mr. John Forman— John Forman Home— now succeeded to<br />
<strong>the</strong> estate under <strong>the</strong> entail. He, dy<strong>in</strong>g without issue <strong>in</strong> 1847, was succeeded by his<br />
younger bro<strong>the</strong>r, William Forman Home, who died <strong>in</strong> 1853, leav<strong>in</strong>g three daughters.<br />
On his death <strong>the</strong> estate passed under <strong>the</strong> entail to his eldest daughter, Jean, who<br />
had married Mr. David Milne, <strong>the</strong> eldest son <strong>of</strong> Admiial Sir David Milne. She<br />
died <strong>in</strong> 187G, and was succeeded by her only son. Colonel David Milne Home <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Wedderburn</strong>, Billie, and Paxton, who is <strong>the</strong> nearest lawful heir <strong>of</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e and tailzie to<br />
David <strong>the</strong> twelfth laird <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wedderburn</strong> (<strong>the</strong> eldest son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> atta<strong>in</strong>ted laird), who<br />
was re-<strong>in</strong>feft <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> estate <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wedderburn</strong> by Mr. N<strong>in</strong>ian Home <strong>of</strong> Billie <strong>in</strong> 1725,<br />
