after Christmas. James is oc<strong>ca</strong>sionally designed "<strong>of</strong> <strong>Wedderburn</strong>" and after<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g at tiist dist<strong>in</strong>guished as "younger," becomes, on <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> James <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> kirk-style (ante, p. xxx.), James <strong>the</strong> elder. He was tiie first <strong>of</strong> his name<br />

to represent Dundee <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scottish Parliament, <strong>of</strong> which he was a member<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1.540. Three years later, toge<strong>the</strong>r with o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> his fatnilv he took art<br />

and part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> slaughter <strong>of</strong> David RoUok, and was "at '<strong>the</strong> horn" <strong>in</strong><br />

consequence, but, like his colleagues, soon got a remission. Among otii.-r<br />

properties owned by him <strong>in</strong> Dundee was one <strong>in</strong> North Kattonraw, which he<br />

sold <strong>in</strong> 15-iO to his "dearest bro<strong>the</strong>r Robert." The charter etfeetiiig this sale<br />

bears his signature and his seal, show<strong>in</strong>g a cheveron l^etween three ro^es or<br />
