Introd. <strong>in</strong> 1G94-9.5, but died 1G95-9G, he liad issue, two daughters and two sons, viz.,<br />
Elizabeth, who married <strong>the</strong> Rev. Robert Rait, m<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>of</strong> Dundee, and<br />
died before 1704, leaviog issue, an only son, Ale.xander Rait; Janet, wiio<br />
died young; John, who died iu iufancy, and Peter (born lGf)7-(i8), who was<br />
long a merchant <strong>in</strong> Dundee, but who, though twice married — (1) to Helen<br />
Lyon ; (2) to Barbara Aucliiulek—had no issue. His second wife died iu<br />
1721 ; he himself <strong>in</strong> l72o-24, when his heir Wiis his great-nephew, David<br />
<strong>Wedderburn</strong> <strong>of</strong> that ilk, who is so named iu 1743-44 anil 17.52-56.'<br />
The provost was thus succeeded by his eldest son and namesake,<br />

manor place <strong>of</strong> Powrie<br />
and gave up <strong>the</strong> estate <strong>of</strong> Kiugenuie to his son. I have<br />
not found much about him. He is <strong>of</strong>ten named <strong>in</strong> regard to family<br />
affairs, as a witness to baptisms, curator to <strong>the</strong> children <strong>of</strong> relatives,<br />
and oc<strong>ca</strong>sionally as "sheriff," and as "sitt<strong>in</strong>g on assize." He is also one<br />
<strong>of</strong> those who, <strong>in</strong> 1G8G, signed a declaration <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tention to "live pea<strong>ca</strong>blie<br />
and regularly free <strong>of</strong> all fanati<strong>ca</strong>l disorder" accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Act <strong>of</strong> 1G85.<br />
He died <strong>in</strong> Jan. 1692, leav<strong>in</strong>g a will by which he directed his " body to be<br />
honestly buryed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ord<strong>in</strong>ar buriall place <strong>of</strong> Dundee, besvil my neirest<br />
friends and relationes," and appo<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g guardians to his sun. He had married<br />
<strong>in</strong> 166-5 his second cous<strong>in</strong>, Grissell, fourth daughter <strong>of</strong> yir Alexander<br />
<strong>Wedderburn</strong> <strong>of</strong> Blackness (post, p. Isii), and by her (born 1G47; died<br />
168-5-86) had issue, four sons, John, Alexander, Peter, and Alexander (born<br />
1681), <strong>of</strong> whom <strong>the</strong> youngest, who alone survived, succeedcil his fa<strong>the</strong>r ; and<br />
four daughters, Elizabeth and Matiltia, both <strong>of</strong> whom died voung; Margaret,<br />
who died unmarried <strong>in</strong> 1692-93 ; and Rachel who married, <strong>in</strong> 1711, Gilbert<br />
Stewart (son <strong>of</strong> Thomas Stewart <strong>of</strong> Stenton), an Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh merchant, but<br />
died without issue.<br />
Ale.xander <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, <strong>the</strong> fourth but only surviv<strong>in</strong>g son <strong>of</strong> his<br />
fa<strong>the</strong>r, thus succeeded him <strong>in</strong> his estates. He was born <strong>in</strong><br />

like his fa<strong>the</strong>r, wa.s not active iu affairs, nor did he add to<br />
his estate. He obta<strong>in</strong>ed, however, from tlje Crown, <strong>in</strong> 1708, a great seal<br />
charter re-erect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> barony <strong>of</strong> Easter Powrie <strong>in</strong>to one whole free barony<br />
now and <strong>in</strong> all time com<strong>in</strong>g to lie <strong>ca</strong>lled <strong>the</strong> barony <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, and<br />
thus he and his successors l)e<strong>ca</strong>me by royal charter " Wedderburos <strong>of</strong> that<br />
ilk." He died <strong>in</strong> 1713, at <strong>the</strong> early age <strong>of</strong> thirty-two, hav<strong>in</strong>g married <strong>in</strong><br />
1703 Grissell Gardyne (<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family <strong>of</strong> Latoun), and by her, who married<br />
secondly, David Graiiam <strong>of</strong> Duntroon. lieir male <strong>of</strong> Claverhouse, Viscount<br />
Dundee, had issue five sons and two daughters, viz., Alexander, Robert, Peter,<br />
David, Gilbert, Grizel, and lUachel, who predeceased her fa<strong>the</strong>r. Four <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>.se<br />
children, <strong>the</strong> last <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir race iu direct liuf, died <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>fancy, while <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
three, Peter, David, and Giizel, succeeded, one after <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, to <strong>the</strong> family estates.<br />
Peter (born 17U.S) was retured heir to his fa<strong>the</strong>r early <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>Wedderburn</strong> ot 1714, but died almost i<strong>in</strong>mi-orn 1710}, who was thus<br />
died 1714.<br />
