PREFACK<br />

most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first volume I have to acknowledge <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d help <strong>of</strong> Mr. Prafaco.<br />

J. H. Percival <strong>in</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al revises <strong>of</strong> that part <strong>of</strong> this <strong>history</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

his mo<strong>the</strong>r's family. The various spell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same name or word is not,<br />

it may be noted, due to oversight, but to <strong>the</strong> fact that I have followed <strong>in</strong><br />

each <strong>ca</strong>se <strong>the</strong> particular record quoted, and have made no attempt at<br />

uniformity.<br />

The illustrations to <strong>the</strong> <strong>book</strong> are not all as satisfactory as I could have<br />

wished, but <strong>the</strong> expense <strong>of</strong> obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g au<strong>the</strong>ntic evidence has compelled<br />

economy <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r directions. In <strong>the</strong> first volume I have placed <strong>the</strong> portraits<br />

<strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> more notable members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family <strong>in</strong> days gone by,<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r with facsimiles <strong>of</strong> a letter from Sir Peter, Lord Gosford, <strong>of</strong> a<br />

beautiful one from Thomas <strong>Wedderburn</strong> <strong>of</strong> Cantra (my great-great-grandfa<strong>the</strong>r),<br />

written <strong>the</strong> night before CuUoden, and <strong>of</strong> that addressed by Sir John<br />

<strong>Wedderburn</strong> to his wife, <strong>the</strong> night before his execution <strong>in</strong> 1746. In <strong>the</strong><br />

second volume will be found reproduced some old family registers, <strong>the</strong><br />

symbols (152.5— 1740) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Wedderburn</strong>s, notaries and clerks <strong>of</strong> Dundee, a<br />

letter from Sir Alexander, fourth baronet <strong>of</strong> Blackness, and <strong>the</strong> signatures <strong>of</strong><br />

various members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family from 1540 to 1800. A glossary <strong>of</strong> some old<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>rwise uncommon words used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> records, and a full <strong>in</strong>dex to <strong>the</strong><br />

whole work, is added at <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second volume.<br />

Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong>.<br />

1898.
