Machane, at <strong>the</strong> rent <strong>of</strong> " three chahlcrs victual, 300 nierks money, a dozen <strong>ca</strong>pons and<br />

uevcn dozen poultry," payable at stated terms, <strong>the</strong> tenant also pay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> vi<strong>ca</strong>rage<br />

duty and <strong>the</strong> schoolmaster's stipend (D.D. 19), and, 15 Feb. 1068, agreed to set <strong>the</strong> mill <strong>of</strong><br />

K<strong>in</strong>genuie <strong>in</strong> tack for live years for " 15 bolls <strong>of</strong> oatmeal, 12 <strong>ca</strong>pons and 1 'J hens," he to<br />

uphold <strong>the</strong> mill "' <strong>in</strong> hir lye<strong>in</strong>g geir" and <strong>the</strong> tenant to uphold it "<strong>in</strong> hir goe<strong>in</strong>g geir<br />

(S.W. 395). In 1671, Jan. 16, he got from John <strong>Wedderburn</strong>. baxter (ante, p. 156), a<br />

North Ne<strong>the</strong>rgait land (D.I'.B. 515)'; H Oct. 1072, is a legatee under <strong>the</strong> will (D.C. 77) <strong>of</strong><br />

his cous<strong>in</strong>, Thomas Haliburton, son <strong>of</strong> Margaret <strong>Wedderburn</strong> (ante, p. 139) ; Sept. 1673,<br />

gets sas<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> two annual rents (G.R.S. 1 1 . 42) ; and, 1 1 Nov. 1676, <strong>of</strong> North Argylegait<br />

a<br />

He does not seem to have taken an active part <strong>in</strong> affaii-s, altliongh oc<strong>ca</strong>sionally named<br />

as giv<strong>in</strong>g sas<strong>in</strong>e as " sherifl' <strong>in</strong> those parts," e./)., Aug. 1667, <strong>of</strong> Grange <strong>of</strong> Barrie to<br />

Patrick Kyd <strong>of</strong> Craigie (D.P.B. 502 ; F.S. 52) ; sitt<strong>in</strong>g on assize, 6 Feb 1669 (D.B.R. 477);<br />

admitted to <strong>the</strong> baxtars' craft, 21 Oct 1069 (D.T.O. if/); giv<strong>in</strong>g sas<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> Woodhill to<br />

AVilliam Kyd, 1 Sept. 1071 (b.I'.D. 516), while, 18 May 1680, he is one <strong>of</strong> those who sign<br />

a declaration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>tention to "live p<strong>ca</strong><strong>ca</strong>blie and regularly, tree <strong>of</strong> all fanati<strong>ca</strong>l disorder"<br />

as required by <strong>the</strong> act <strong>of</strong> 2 June 1685 (D.B.R. vol. 36, tiy-leaf).<br />

He is constantly named <strong>in</strong> connection with members <strong>of</strong> his family, as witness<strong>in</strong>g at<br />

Dundee <strong>the</strong> baptisms <strong>of</strong> children <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> name,- both <strong>in</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r's lifetime and later; an<br />

a witness to <strong>the</strong> sas<strong>in</strong>e given to Agnes, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir Peter <strong>Wedderburn</strong> <strong>of</strong> Gosford, on<br />

her marriage, 8 Oct. 1674 (G.R.S. 43) and to that given to Cecilia, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir .\lexander<br />

<strong>of</strong> Blackness, on her marriage, Feb. 1676 (j4. 44) ; as a curator to James, Peter, and<br />

Margaret, childien <strong>of</strong> William Kvd <strong>of</strong> Woodhill and Jean <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, 20 Aug. 1676,<br />

. . 20 March 1 680, 18 Nov. 16S5 (D.D. 23; D.Dec. 6, 16) <strong>the</strong> eldest <strong>of</strong> whom discharged<br />

him and his o<strong>the</strong>r curators <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir trust, 26 April 1GS7 (R.D. 21 6).<br />

On <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> 16S3 he succeeded him as his heir, was executor to his<br />

will (S.A.T 10),^ and a curator to his half-bro<strong>the</strong>r, Peter, 23 June 1683 (D.Dec. 13). Ho<br />

at once, 20 Dec. 10^3, got a great seal confirmation <strong>of</strong> his marriage settlement and <strong>of</strong> liis<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r's disposition to him <strong>of</strong> Easter Powrie (S.W. 401 ; G S.R. 129) ; an act, 7 Jan. 1 084,<br />

<strong>of</strong> conversion <strong>in</strong> his favour relative to So\ith Marraygait lands (S W. 402) ; a general rctour<br />

as heir to his fa<strong>the</strong>r, 1 July 1684 (S.W. 468-69 ; D Dec. 14), and a second' confirmatory<br />

charter <strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>genuie to himself and his wife, 18 July 1684 (S.W. 470). He was cognosced<br />

heir to his fa<strong>the</strong>r, 15 June 168.i, both <strong>in</strong> a Dundee tenement (D.C. 79) and <strong>in</strong> an annual<br />

rent (D.P.B. 536) ; 16 March 1686, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> shadow half <strong>of</strong> Wester Gourdie (S.AV. 475;<br />

R.H. 13), precept and sas<strong>in</strong>e follow<strong>in</strong>g 12, 20 May (S.W. 476-77 ; F.S. 71) ; and yet aga<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r annual rent, 31 May lOi^S (D.P.B. 539).<br />

He is named <strong>in</strong> regard to various bonds, discharges, decrees, etc. 1078-91. Of <strong>the</strong>se,<br />

one was a bond by him and his fa<strong>the</strong>r as <strong>ca</strong>utioner to John M'edderbum <strong>of</strong> Gosford,<br />

20, 24 Aug. 1681 (S.W. 455) on which we f<strong>in</strong>d him pay<strong>in</strong>g annual rent, 22 Nov. 1683,<br />

(Bl. 18) ; 28 Sept. 1674, witness (D.B. 24) ; 15 May 1675. legatee under <strong>the</strong> will <strong>of</strong> Patrick Kyd<br />

(F.S. 63) ; 7 Nov. 1676, <strong>ca</strong>utioner to <strong>the</strong> will <strong>of</strong> Sir Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong> <strong>of</strong> Blackness (BrT. 15) ;<br />

22 Dec. 1677, discharpe to him (S.\V. 4.32) ; and 18 June 1678, an <strong>in</strong>quest for retour <strong>of</strong> John <strong>of</strong><br />

Graham Claveiliouse as heir to his great grandfa<strong>the</strong>r (.S.\\'. 433-33 a) ; 14 July 1681, decreet on<br />

summons by Ruliert L<strong>in</strong>d.s.ay <strong>in</strong> Dundee v, Jamea <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, clerk, Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

K<strong>in</strong>genuie, and o<strong>the</strong>ra (K..A..D. 105).<br />
