Ixxx. THE WEDDERBURN BOOK.<br />

Introd. recorded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> diary <strong>of</strong> John Ramsay <strong>of</strong> Ochtertyre, is quoted at length <strong>in</strong><br />

this volume (pp. 398-400). He died <strong>in</strong> 1756, leav<strong>in</strong>g by his wife, Janet Ogilvy,<br />

two sons and a daufjhter, Alexander, David, and Janet. Of <strong>the</strong>se <strong>the</strong> <strong>ca</strong>reer <strong>of</strong><br />

Alexander is well known. He <strong>ca</strong>me, after a dramatic exit from <strong>the</strong> Scotch<br />

bar, to <strong>the</strong> English one, and <strong>the</strong>re rose to be Loid Chancellor,<br />

Alexander. Lord be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first <strong>of</strong> his countrymen who ever achieved this<br />

etc., died 1805. dist<strong>in</strong>ction. His cliaracter and tiie metliods <strong>of</strong> his rise have<br />

been much criticized, but <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> judgment <strong>of</strong> Lord Campbell,<br />

one <strong>of</strong> his successors, much <strong>of</strong> tliis criticism may well be mitigated. He died<br />

<strong>in</strong> 180o, and, his only child (a son ) hav<strong>in</strong>g died when quite an <strong>in</strong>fant, with him <strong>the</strong><br />

male l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> his great gran
