Ixxx. THE WEDDERBURN BOOK. Introd. recorded in the diary of John Ramsay of Ochtertyre, is quoted at length in this volume (pp. 398-400). He died in 1756, leaving by his wife, Janet Ogilvy, two sons and a daufjhter, Alexander, David, and Janet. Of these the career of Alexander is well known. He came, after a dramatic exit from the Scotch bar, to the English one, and there rose to be Loid Chancellor, Alexander. His cliaracter and tiie metliods of his rise have been much criticized, but in the judgment of Lord Campbell, one of his successors, much of tliis criticism may well be mitigated.
