migrants, including smuggled migrants, from other<br />

parts of East, South-East <strong>and</strong> South Asia, such as<br />

Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, the Philippines <strong>and</strong><br />

a growing number from mainl<strong>and</strong> China. 9 In 2011,<br />

1,748 illegal entries from mainl<strong>and</strong> China were<br />

detected in Hong Kong (China) <strong>and</strong> repatriated,<br />

a decrease from 2,479 detected a year earlier. 10<br />

In addition, Hong Kong (China) authorities detect<br />

approximately 10,000 illegal residents each year<br />

(Table 42). According to the Government of Macau<br />

(China), approximately 1,500 persons, most of<br />

them from mainl<strong>and</strong> China, are detected each<br />

year seeking to enter illegally. A similar number<br />

of persons residing in Macau (China) illegally<br />

are apprehended each year (Tables 43 <strong>and</strong> 44).<br />

Additionally, albeit in small numbers, smuggled<br />

migrants from Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, the<br />

Philippines, Thail<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Viet Nam have been<br />

found trying to enter Macau (China). 11<br />
