As with the GDB2HMSDSS, the first thing done by the application is toopen the HEC-DSS file containing the streamflow records for the new HEC-RASinput configuration. As mentioned before, the ZOPEN DSS subroutine is invokedfor attaching the source DSS file to the DSS2GDB application. The DSS2GDBapplication obtains basic information (HEC-DSS descriptors) from the file, allowing reading operations to proceed.Once the DSS2GDB script tool gets hold of the DSS file, it generates theDSS catalog (list of all pathnames in a DSS file) and stores the pathname list in acatalog file (.dsc file extension) with the same DSS file’s name. To generate thecatalog the DSS2GDB application calls two DSS subroutines, the ZOPNCA andZCAT. The ZOPNCA DSS subroutine opens an existing a DSS file’s catalog fileor creates and opens a new DSS file’s catalog file. Once the catalog files havebeen externally opened, the ZCAT subroutine generates a listing of the recordpathnames inside the DSS file. The DSS2GDB application now has a hold of the DSS file containing therunoff hydrographs but does not know what pathnames/records it must extractfrom the DSS catalog. Thus, the application needs to establish some type ofsearching criteria to select the pathnames from the entire catalog that correspondto external source hydrographs at reach entry points. So we have the catalog butdo not know what items of it are the ones needed for extraction. The first filter criterion that the program can establish is for the sitelocation of records/pathnames. The application uses the aforementionedHydroJunctionHasSchematicNode relationship to navigate through all the119
