The main objective of this Map2Map component is the generation of acomprehensive sequence of steps for subtracting the terrain elevation surface fromthe water surface elevation to obtain water depths and to produce an accuraterepresentation of the floodplain inundation map as schematically shown in Figure4.44.Figure 4.44 Flood Map Created by Subtracting Land Surface from Water Surface4.1.13.1 Create and Edit TINThe “Create TIN” tool is a standard ArcGIS tool, which is used to create anew TIN with an extent provided by an existing input dataset. In principle, thistool can be executed at any point in time but for the Map2Map workflow it wasset up to execute only after the cross sections have been successfully updated(populated with associated water elevations) from the previous XML2GDBprocess. Once the “blank” TIN surface is created, the “Edit TIN” tool (another168
standard ArcGIS tool), is used in Map2Map to add the cross sections as soft breaklines (no variation in water elevation along them), using the field name of theflow profile (e.g., PF_1) populated with the water surface elevations along thecross section cut lines. The final outcome is a TIN surface of water elevationswith triangle nodes lying over the cut line vertices of the hydraulically definedcross sections.Figure 4.45 Create and Edit TIN Model ComponentTIN to RasterThe TIN to Raster is another standard ArcGIS tool (represented by ahammer icon). It is used to convert the water surface TIN to a raster dataset, sothat it can be readily compared to a raster surface representing land surfaceelevation (DEM).169
