It is expected that the user isfamiliar with ArcGIS software and knows how to perform basic operations suchas adding data, opening attribute tables, selecting features, and editing the data. Itis also expected that the user is familiar with the Arc Hydro data model for WaterResources (structural components, nomenclature, schema application, geometricand schematic network generations, building relationships, etc.) since thegeographic integration of HMS and RAS is done through it.2 Data RequirementsAll the data necessary for this tutorial exercise are stored in data folder calledMap2Map and available at:ftp://ftp.crwr.utexas.edu/pub/outgoing/Robayo/Map2Map or in the accompanyingCD as described in appendix B. The input datasets needed to execute this exerciseare:• The Map2Map pilot project dataset• The precipitation event to be simulated• An Arc Hydro data model for the study area• The NEXRAD HRAP grid polygon dataset for the study area• A preexisting HEC-HMS model setup for the study area• A preexisting HEC-RAS model setup for the study area• A digital elevation model (DEM) of the floodplain extent3 Installing the Map2Map Pilot Project202
The first step consists in installing the Map2Map pilot project on your localcomputer by following the steps below and then becoming familiar with it bylooking at the data structure and executing the entire process.The model builder toolbox (Map2Map.tbx) contains a model for going from arainfall map to a flood inundation map. The processes involved are: Import ofNEXRAD rainfall data into geodatabase with Arc Hydro data model, transfer datafrom NEXRAD cells to subbasins/catchments, export time series of precipitationto HEC-DSS, run the HEC-HMS model to obtain streamflow hydrographs atoutlets. Import results from HEC-DSS into GIS, prepare and HEC-DSS file justfor the HEC-RAS model, run the HEC-RAS model and generate a GIScompatible output file, import results back to GIS by means of an XML format,get water surface elevations from XML on cross sections, and then execute all thefloodplain delineation routines to obtain the flood inundation polygon.3.1 Copying the Map2Map directoryTo install, first copy the entire Map2Map folder on the local hard drive under C:\.If you put the contents in another location, you might have to remap some of thetools used in the model. Even though relative pathnames were used to referenceinput files for each tool, sometimes the input locations STILL have to beremapped in your system.3.2 Installing HEC-HMS and HEC-RASYou should have installed the HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS modeling programs onyour computer. These models are avalaible for download from the HEC websiteat: http://www.hec.usace.army.mil/default.html.3.3 Setting up the Modeling DirectoriesThe installation of HEC-HMS will usually create a folder called hmsproj underC:\ (Unless the user defines a different project directory during installation). Copythe HEC-HMS project folder Salado_Unified from theHEC_Program_Installation folder included with Map2Map(C:\Map2Map\HEC_Program_Installation\hmsproj) into the hmsproj folder underC:\. So your HMS project directory will be located at C:\hmsproj\MyHMSprojectCopy the rasproj folder from the HEC_Program_Installation folder included withMap2Map to C:\. So your RAS project directory will be located atC:\rasproj\MyRASproject203
