There are not specific valid values for the value units of the time seriesrecords in HEC-DSS or Arc Hydro. In practice, however, some notation is morestandard in engineering projects. Some of these standard notations are presentedin Table 4.6.Table 4.6: Unit Notation Equivalence between HEC-DSS and Arc HydroThe Data TypeThe Arc Hydro time series data type defines several categories of the timeseries records. For instance, if the time series value corresponds to an instant intime the values are classified as instantaneous. If the values represent theaccumulated measurement since the beginning of the event being monitored thevalues are classified as cumulative. If the values represent the amount recordedfor each time interval only without regard for the starting time in the past therecords as classified as incremental. If the values represent the average rate over atime interval the time series records are classified as average. This criterion forclassifying time series records is present in all time series systems including ArcHydro and HEC-DSS under different notations. HEC-DSS stores the data type asa header of the pathname card and not as a pathname part. It is extracted for each135
