For HEC-HMS this code corresponds to the textstring used as a feature identifier in the basin file for the upstream hydrologicelement that enters streamflow into the river system. These elements normallycorrespond to outlet-nodes representing tributary entrance points or the headwaterwatershed for the most upstream river segment over which runoff hydrographs arecomputed. A list of these elements directly contributing flow to reach segments isalso defined in the basin file (.basin file extension) that describes the geometry ofthe HEC-HMS model. These ModelCodes in HEC-HMS (HMSCode) are storedin the "B Part" of the block pathnames in the HEC-DSS time series file for HEC-RAS.48
For HEC-RAS, the connectivity is accomplished by knowing which crosssection is associated with the previous hydrologic features (HMSCodedelements). This implies knowing which river, reach and stationing the crosssectionlies on, e.g. “Rosillo, Upper, 93528.56”. This identifier represents asequence of comma-delimited elements herein defined as RASCodes.Ideally, this model codification should obey a systematic namingconvention for watersheds, streams, reaches, etc. to be applied throughout theentire San Antonio basin. A proposed generic naming convention has beenadopted by the Florida Water District’s (Southwest Florida Water ManagementDistrict, 2002).To enable connectivity between the proposed H&H models, thegeographic connectivity features (SchematicNodes and CrossSections) have to belabeled with the corresponding HMSCode and RASCode values. For the HEC-RAS features, the cross sections, this task might be straight forward if theGeoRAS interface was used to create them since the StreamCode, ReachCode,and Measure/Station values are created by the interface and the three values cansimply be concatenated to get the three components of the RASCode attribute.For the HEC-1 or HEC-HMS models that are normally available, thislabeling has to be done manually unless some protocol for systematic namingconvention of modeling elements is adopted as proposed by the initiatives of theSouthwest Florida Water Management District’s procedures manual, in whichcase the task might be automated.49
